    I believe the reliability issues related to plastic tips comes from the old Hornady A Max bullets. Supposedly this issue was fixed with the introduction of the ELD-X and ELD-M.

    40 cal vs 45 cal smokeless

    40s are not legal in as many states, but if that doesn't bother you, my limited experience would tell you to not be afraid of a 40 if it excites you. The ballistics and milder recoil are worth it in my opinion.
