As Robby was killing a buck I hiked into an area with a high burn. For the small amount of country (relative to what we covered this morning) I could glass in about an hour I saw 18 deer. Five of those were small bucks but nothing even close to a shooter. A couple of the deer were over 8,700 ft...
I just got to the four wheeler and I’m on my way...guess I just needed to get out of the way of the buck master.
Super excited to get over to Robby. On a hunt things can sure change fast!

Looking forward to this hunt and ready to hit it hard!
As Robby said I had this hunt a few years ago and was fortunate to kill a good buck. Here’s the pic of the buck I shot in 2017. Hope we can beat it this year!
What I learned is to have a chance we will need to cover a tremendous...
Hey Journeyman,
He scored 196 1/8.
When I saw him in August, full velvet, I was thinking 200-205”. But once I taped him out he just didn’t have the mass or eye guards to get there. 35 inches of mass.

Here are a few pics of a buck I killed in Idaho this year.
On a very tough year for deer numbers, I was fortunate to find this buck during a scouting trip toward the end of August. I only got to see him for about 10 seconds until he disappeared back into the timber. I followed with 5 other...
I was charged this spring while shed hunting by a black bear sow with cubs in 67. She came at me 3 different times even after I emptied my bear spray on her. It was quite the rodeo. Odd thing was she saw me over 100 yards away and came at me like a rocket. She could have easily turned and ran...
I live in Idaho and my girl is 10 and old enough to hunt. She’s excited but still very small...only about 60lbs. For Xmas I bought her a youth Savage 7mm-08 with a box of Hornady 120grain reduced recoil bullets. I sighted it in last night and was surprised at the recoil as it might still be a...
I came up with 16% of mule deer hunters in 2018 were non-resident. I agree, that’s a reasonable allocation and percentage to me.
Where I hope this management plan is heading is allowing tag quotas on an individual unit/region basis versus 14k non-res tags state wide. We all know mule deer...
I didn’t give the answer in my post. So the probability of drawing one of the 5 tags if all hunts had draw odds of 20% would be 67%.

I’m no statistician but I think I know the formula. If you put in for 5 choices, each of the hunts have an independent draw, so you can’t just add up each of the draw odds for the hunts. So if each hunts have a 20% draw probability, your chances of drawing 1 of the 5 choices would not be 100%...
I can’t speak for all, but for some of the eastern Idaho units the recommendation to cut either sex hunts came from the Biologists after aerial surveys were complete.
For The Upper Snake Region to recommend these changes it must have been pretty bad.
Also these counts were done before the...
Great info idelkslayer...thanks for pulling that all together!
The 2018 harvest stats will be very interesting. In eastern and southeast Idaho I’m thinking hunter #’s may be higher, with similar success rates as 2017.
Non-res tags sold out this year prior to the end of general season in...
I don’t believe the camo pattern is that important when spot and staking bucks. The deer will likely spot movement first. Pick something that is quite, comfortable, and will perform under the conditions you are hunting. That being said I like Lippi, Columbia, and Sitka.

For those garage mounts it is just a 1” x 4” piece of wood. Then just some 1” Velcro straps that are sticky on one side. Not real creative or fancy but it works. Probably could have flipped those brackets around to hide them...didn’t think about that until you mentioned it :).
Great pics guys...
Nice bull! It takes a lot of room in a house to hold a bull elk shoulder mount. I’d probably have to do a pedestal or something. It looks awesome with those vaulted ceilings.
