    Hunting dry country

I have no idea where Sneaky was thinking about hunting. It has been my observation that elk in dry country and on the desert cover more territory, and are fewer in number than their wet country cousins. I have a friend that successfully hunts them on a regular basis and gets some very large...

    Hunting dry country

Easttowest, I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you or that you need to prove your point. I just know where elk will go to some fields in the evening and forage during the night. Then they return several miles over sage hills to their bedding areas. I do not know where they have any...

    Hunting dry country

I like tree stand hunting dry country. Elk will bed miles from where they spent the night feeding and watering, but they end up near some water. If you can find a secluded spring in good cover near a bedding area, it can be a very productive place to hang a stand. Elk use different bedding...

    Elk moving away from bugles

I have watched herds leave from an excellent location bugle when the hunter had no idea any elk were around. The elk did not answer. They just left the area. Elk get educated, and when they get accustomed to seeing or smelling a nimrod whenever they investigate a bugle; they soon just leave...

    Hanging European elk mount

I drill into the back of the skull and hang the skull on a 1/8" or 3/16" bolt. The drilled hole comes through into the cavity where the spinal cord goes through, so the machine screw never shows unless you get real close and look under the skull. If I don't want even that possibility of the...

    Elk and early season temps

I like temps in the 80s. I ambush elk from a tree stand. I often wait near water for elk to get thirsty in their beds and come to get a drink. Elk are just like us. They need more water when it is hot.

To call or not to call

I see a lot of elk wisdom on this thread. It would please me to make Beendare's hunt just a little tougher by seeing hunters better educated to quit blowing on their calls so much. And when they call to know what they were saying. I sure got a laugh to myself when I saw a new hunter with a...

To call or not to call

No one can make those glutaral sounds only bull elk can bugle. Well almost no one. I was amazed when I saw Mike Slinkard coming in after making that sound. I have been elk hunting and calling longer than most. I can still be fooled. Some elk sound terrible, and some hunters are good. Very...

To call or not to call

I call in more hunters than elk. The last time I went out calling I brought in two groups (5 hunters) within an hour. (Elk called in: Zero.) And I thought I was in a good area to try calling. After that I just went back to my tree stand in a different area where I got a bull soon after.

To call or not to call

Many new archery elk hunters think calling is the magic ticket to getting elk. It is way over used in many areas by hunters that don't know the subtleties involved. Frequency and even length of the call can make a big difference. Every elk bow hunter likely wants to be the Pied Piper of elk...

    Ek rubs and scouting

Elk water at stock at tanks and troughs. I have killed several at them. My son shot a bull at one. Upon getting hit, it jumped into the Powder River trough. My son thought he might have a big problem getting it out. Fortunately it finally got out on its own only to die a few yards away.

    Ek rubs and scouting

rtockstein, your rub is from last year. The limbs remaining on the tree are all dry. I agree with gerbdog on Jsqualls tree. That said; elk can bend a sapling like that over with their antlers and rub it up for more than 12 feet.

    Ek rubs and scouting

The difference between Paul/Elknut and me is based on our hunting technique. If I was calling and covering a lot of territory, I would not spend a lot of time monitoring a rub line either. I set up a tree stand where I see elk are likely to show up so I can ambush one. I am not chasing them...

    Ek rubs and scouting

I pay attention to places that have rubs from multiple years. Check and see what is going on there. Is it a convenient bedding area? Are they spaced out on the route to a water hole? If you have any place where elk show up frequently, it can be a good spot to ambush them.

    Ek rubs and scouting

You should be able to find some fresh rubs in a couple of weeks. They start rubbing mid August. It is still too early.

    Cheap game bags

I have hunted for well over 50 years and have never bought an expensive game bag, and have never had any spoilage, or insect eggs associated with poor bags. I have probably been associated with taking out 100 deer and elk. Allen type bags, or pillow cases work fine. I get Allen/Remington bags...

Which of these cartridges should I take on my first elk hunt?

Under just the right circumstances I am sure I could kill an elk with a 22 long Rifle round. It is illegal and totally inadequate for deer and elk hunting. Just because something will work under ideal conditions does not make it a good selection for elk hunting. I killed my first bull with a...

    Is this a good sign?

It has been my observation that in the Summer through early September, I have spots where I see mostly just cows and small bulls, and places where I pick up mostly better bulls. This time of year the cows have their nursery herds and the bulls are in bachelor bunches. The bulls and cows will...

Which of these cartridges should I take on my first elk hunt?

To my way of thinking, you are asking about using a gun that is close to the minimum needed to hunt elk, and one that you can't shoot accurately. That is not a good choice. If you can't shoot the 06 accurately, why are you holding on to it. If is is just a keepsake, hang it up somewhere for...
