I thought about it, and still might. My can was in jail for 9 months and I still hadn't made up my mind when I finally got my stamp about a month ago. One of my great concerns was balance intersected with reducing overall length and velocity. My gun shot great and carried great without the can.
I just picked up my '06 from the smith about an hour ago. Cut to 18". Super excited to see how it goes. Will be dedicated suppressed with a Gemtech Tracker.
Winchester. Nicer action, easier to swap trigger, more scope ring options.
I have a 77 '06 and winny featherweight 270 - despite chambering differences the winny is a nicer gun off the rack.
I've found the OEM rings to be quite good, there's several different heights in either 1" or 30mm. Leupold makes some too. I have never tried the Warne example, but they look pretty stout!
I have a Winchester 101 that I love. I also have a Browning Maxxus II Ultimate that I reach for 10/10 times when shooting clays. Only time the 101 has come out of the safe in the last few years is during the olympic shooting matches and my son wanted to handle it.
Good enough for me. However, I don't often find myself needing to glass difficult terrain in low light conditions. My hunting mainly consists of scanning reprods 500-1500 yards away in often rainy or windy conditions, or hot and dry conditions if archery. Being able to hold steady with my hat...
I sold a pair of swaro SLC 10's after a season and bought the Trinovid HD 8x42's. Nothing wrong with the swaro's, but to my eye the Leica's were a lateral move in terms of optical quality, better FOV, 8x suited my hunting better and I saved like $700 or something that I put into other gear, not...
Old thread, love it!
Love my vintage tan browning maxxus II 12g. No issues so far but not even a years worth of ownership so grain of salt and all that. Shooting without cleaning until failure. So far about 1500 rounds of 3’s and 2 3/4’s in rainy/snowy/hot weather. No 3.5’s yet. Fit and feel is...
I was recently in your shoes and wanted a nice Browning or Beretta. The examples I played with all mounted and swung great, looked great and were very classy but also north of $2k. The silver pigeon beretta I was jonesing for kept me up at night! It was just too much for my wallet though...
Just picked up my RX7 Ultra. Had it assembled with an HHA Tetra single pin sight. All good right?
On my RX5 Ultra I have a Spot Hogg 7 pin fixed sight. Super easy.
My problem, which I'd given zero thought to previously, is that I can't read the damn sight tape. I've worn readers for a few...
I've been really happy with my Trijicon Huron 3-12. Bought it as a placeholder until I decide "what I really want" for my AR15 rat gun/plinker. Paid $440 at Sportsmans. So far, tracking is spot on, glass isn't terrible at 12x. It's an MOA scope, has BDC in MOA that's not too busy. My only...
After years of use of fixed 3, 5 pin Hunters, and 1, 5 pin Tommy Hogg...some with dovetail, some not. I have finally settled on Hunter 7 pin sights for both of my carbon Hoyts. For my uses (elk & 3D) it's the best combination of durability, "light" weight, range (out to 80 yards) and...
I have two that work just fine out to 550 - haven't shot beyond that. One for my 30-06 and one on my 270. Both vx3i 3-10x40. No complaints. My buddy has 4-14x40 with custom turret too and his gives no grief. That said I spent a lot of time collecting data and averaging it somewhat. My 270...
Tons of deer sign and saw several decent bucks. Excellent glass is key for picking out bucks in the burn. If it’s been dry walking will be really noisy unless you’re outside of the burn in the timber.
I'll echo Dirtscoots. That said, it's doable. The only elk tags I've ever punched were Roosevelts. Your advantage will be coming from altitude to sea level and theoretically be all the stronger cardiovascularly. Hunting the coast can be as demanding or easy as you want to make it. Pretty...
Last fall I sent in my 20 year old Leica spotter for repair. Called them up and said I dropped it, what to do? Eyepiece was all jacked up and wouldn't mate with objective lens. I thought it was a goner due to the age.
They cleaned up, repaired and returned free of charge. Took 3 weeks. I...
Two prong attack, simultaneous execution:
1) Go to bow shop(s), shoot what interests you with a pro observing. If you're torqueing the bow to the degree necessary to derail the string they will see this and stop you immediately. If this occurs you'll know the odds are you, unfortunately, had...
Just got back yesterday from 5 days camping there. Found two nice bulls and about 40 cows between them. Listened to them bugling from camp if you can believe that. I wouldn't worry too much about spending multiple nights living out of your pack unless you love that type of thing. There's a...
Pay off mortgage then modest renovation of house and shop. Leaves me with about $4.5m. Invest $3.5m in 5% yield state muni's, receive $175k per year fed/state tax free. Use the money to hunt what I want where I want. Leftover $1m is for a few cars to fill up my shop.
