    Rage NC for elk? Thoughts?

Green light. I'll be using the NC this year for elk. It's all about using what you're confident in and shot placement anyways.

    Boxers and socks

Merino boxers, anti-monkey butt powder and darn tough #1405 socks are the way to go.

    First Elk Hunt

CO for sure, especially if you're coming from anywhere east to cut down on drive time. OTC tags, lots of elk, tons of public land to get lost in. You'll have a blast. Enjoy.

    TOPO - what's steep?

I use caltopo.com to check incline %s when planning routes. When I see that purple I cringe knowing it's gonna be a ball buster climb. Even in red/orange/yellow zones I plan to zig zag my way up unless I'm crunched for time.

Key Attributes of Successful Elk Hunters

I think it's a combination of knowledge and work ethic. You need to know what your doing, where to find elk, how to hunt them effectively. But you also need that mental and physical toughness that pushes you up the next ridge, allows you to hunt all day and not get discouraged when situations...

    NM Unit 13 Outfitters-Archery

I have this tag as well. Was just over in the unit on a scout trip. It's totally doable solo DIY, that's what I'll be doing. In terms of guides I would check out Black Mountain Outfitters (bmohunts.com).

    Nevada Archery 171-173

I'm not sure if truck camping will be your best bet. I also drew this tag. Unfortunately, with travel I won't be able to get in until later in August but still planning on packing in above tree line and staying mobile while bouncing from vantage to vantage. I think your gear list looks fine. I...

    First Colorado elk hunt advice

Can't stress physical conditioning enough. Get a weighted pack on your back and hit the stair stepper or inclined treadmill. Being in shape will make the hunt much more enjoyable. Also hunt all day. My first western hunt was to CO on an OTC archery. I punched my tag by still hunting a thick...

    Sevr broadheads

I'm surprised to hear that guys are experiencing bad blood trails with them. I don't have any experience as I've always shot rage with great results. Would have expected the same from Sevr. (Definitely pumped that rage found a way to do away with the collars this year, nothing more annoying)

    Food list for 7 days?

What works wells for me is keeping a rather (not perfect) ketogenic diet. During the off-season I work on training my body for physically demanding periods of time with no fuel. For example, I do all my weighted hikes around 8-9am in the morning and won't have my first bite of food until noon or...

    Saving weight in the pack

I love the game of pushing the envelope of ultralight hunting. Once you're light it gets tougher and tougher to find where you can cut that next ounce. I'm always looking to the future. I can't wait for the day of 2lb packs, being able to pull water out of thin mountain air, 300 calorie per...

great over the counter units in Idaho? help?

Don't worry about the unit. Worry about having the proper gear, sufficient physical conditioning, elk knowledge and the right mindset. If you formulate a strategy, hunt all day and put miles on your boots you'll get your opportunity to harvest an elk no matter the unit. Best of luck.

High Country Mule Deer Gear List

Just hope I can help! Above timberline I don't think I've ever had an issue with mosquitoes but I have had big ants that will bite and rodents will definitely come into your shelter at night. Numerous times I've woken up in the morning with mouse sh*t on my quilt. Doesn't bother me at all but if...

High Country Mule Deer Gear List

List looks pretty solid to me. Agreed I would cut down on some of the clothing. For reference, I pack one sitka lightweight hoody, sitka ascent pants, a kuiu super down ultra puffy jacket (usually leave the puffy pants in the truck), a lightweight rain layer only if definite rain is in the...
