3pts going to get a Gen elk tag in 2021? **Wyoming

There is a great reason for them, not us... to hold our NR Money...It is called they maximizing revenue by holding the money and getting interest/return off of our app money until you draw unsuccessful. 3 extra mons mean extra $$ to them. It is one step beyond AZ, UT, NV requiring you to pay $...

How do you travel (drive) with your gear?

I would recommend taking any valuable optics and guns into your hotel room. Park somewhere well lit and you should be fine. I have been driving to NM, MT, CO for 20 years and have never had a problem. As a rule never leave anything valuable in an untended truck. Anywhere.

    The Cooler Thread........

I use the Coleman 120's. They do great and I beat the crap out of them so I see no need to buy one of the higher end ones as they keep everything cold just fine.

Trophy Elk Hunt Where to Go?

For that goal check the various Indian Res hunts or landowner tags. With that goal it is going to cost you between $ 15K to $ 25K . Landowner route will cost you $ 10-15K for the tag and $ 5-8K for outfitter depending on who you choose. At those prices I would not attempt to cheap out on...

    Elk Huntin’ Boots.

I hike a lot during Elk season and bought the Solomon Quest 4D GTX last season. Great light boot. Very comfortable. I have a pair of Irish Setters that are very comfortable too but they are heavier. the Solomon's are great for climbing and longer distances. You will get a lot of...

The Myth of sustainable Elk numbers....a saga of government conspiracy

Maybe they are just getting better at being "Elk" than we are as hunters......they are tough bastards which is why I love chasin them.

The 1 Thing You Learned- ELK

Take the first shot you are confident in making. Waiting for the "perfect shot" rarely turns out well with Elk.

    Hunt Locations

unfortunately asking about hunting areas on this board is almost useless. People will answer general questions but are very protective about anything specific. PM might be more effective as it is not broadcast.

Rifle weight for new Elk hunter

you are making a good choice. I love my 300 WM but got a 300 RUM 15 yrs ago. Inside 300 yds they are similar. Over 400 the RUM drops very little and for me is a great Elk gun. The 300 WBY is similar. You can never have too much money, too many Elk rifle or.......

2021 Arizona Non Resident Elk choices

That is s tough one. Most of the recommended units still require 23 + pts for early rifle / muzzle loader. Late season rifle / muzzleloader you might be able to draw a decent unit like 10 or 27 but late season is hit or miss with the bigger bulls going deep.

Rifle weight for new Elk hunter

One other point. Don't be afraid to get a muzzle break. I did when I first got mine and I shoot 3/4 with it. It recoils less than a 7mm with the break. I shot my buddies without and my shoulder didn't like it...

Rifle weight for new Elk hunter

I have Elk hunted for 20 + yrs with a 300 RUM with a 3-18 50 mm scope that weighs in the 9 lbs range. I have hiked 50 miles per week and never felt it weighed too much. The other issue you need to understand with a 300 Weatherby is the lighter the rifle the more the perceived and actual...

    Montana Non Resident hunters read!

It is motivated by money both at the state level and outfitter level. I have hunted MT with an outfitter for 25 yrs until a few yrs ago. Initially the Outfitters were guaranteed licenses for their clients. You paid a premium of $400-500 to get this outfitter license versus the general NR...

    WY NR Rifle Elk draw

Absolutely. Hunting is hunting not shooting but expectations talking to outfitter is we will see 320- 330+ bulls. Unless it is a private land hunt I think anyone that promises you bigger is questionable. If I have a good hunt and shoot a 320 bull I would be very satisfied. I have killed enough...

New to elk hunting and point system

I agree with 98% of what you have said above about the point system being flawed. Just leave the old guy thing out. The System favors people that have been buying points for 14 yrs not decades. No one is getting screwed over it is just a system that doesn't allow new hunters/new applications...

    243 for elk

"I knew an Idaho guide that told me he killed over 30 elk with a 243. A rusty old Browning BLR lever action." Many a rancher or local have killed many elk with 243 and 270 but they are not Non Residents coming in for one week of Elk hunting trying to maximize their opportunity on Elk that...

    243 for elk

All of the shot placement arguments aside assuming everything doesn't go perfect which is what you owe the animal you need to understand that the 243 on Elk has limitations. Most experts agree that ethical kill energy at impact on an elk is 1000 ft.lbs. This should be above any personal...

    243 for elk

My favorite all around rifle is my Remington 300WM. I use it on deer with 160 grain loads and 180 grain loads on Elk. If I was looking for a good elk rifle that I could use on other things that is what I would buy. My favorite Elk rifle is my 300RUM but that is just me. I don't have a...

    243 for elk

The limitation on a 243 is the range at which you can use it to kill an Elk. Shot placement kills Elk not caliber but everyone needs to understand the range of lesser caliber bullets on Elk. They are tough bastards.
