The endless debate. Camp high or low?? Know the prevailing winds in the area. The prevailing winds will trump the thermals in most cases. The best find is a high spring or lake where you can set up a camp in the timber a few hundred yards away. Make certain you are not cutting off the best elk...
If you fly make certain the truck rental company understands you “need” a 4x4 truck. Some guys I met in ID came in and the rental company slid them in a 2wheel without them noticing. That wasted a day. They went back and got another truck. It broke down later. They spent thousands and only...
first of all, packing is priority 1. We usually pack out together without stopping until it is all in.
We have hung meat for a week in aug sept as long as it freezes at night. Hang it open at night. Get up early, and take it all down and wrap it up in a bundle of old sleeping bags and then...
I think that is exactly it. There is no way it could have gotten on the inside and not ended up with a kill. I sat there and looked at him with his head down facing straight away. I waited until he turned and I just screwed up and likely shot too soon. He was right on the edge of a bench and a...
If it is hunting hrs, my gun is in my hands. I have never used the quick release. The SG setup is much lighter than the kifaru. I only use it so I can use my trekking poles, or hoof back in the dark.
nothing special. I put a quick connect female on the frames and a self locking male on the gun strap. Since it worked nice, I will catch a smaller buckle setup sometime like a 3/4 or 5/8. there is no reason for a giant 1" buckle there.
I run the SG gun sling on my SG and Kifaru. I only use it when I am packing or hiking at night. I put a buckle on the top and just unhook it and stuff it in the bag when not in use.

I have never really hunted with anybody but my brother. We have different skills that we bring to the table. We can both hold our own solo, but we are a pretty killer team when we can hunt a drainage with a strategy. I have great eyesight, and my brother has incredible hearing. When we are...
If at all possible, don't shoot your first elk at dark, and have to clean it up at night. I was 12, my brother was 14. We spent many hrs dragging meat around in the dirt with dull knives and ignorance to spare. When we got home, Dad was mortified. He was one of those guys that gutted and skinned...
Whatever shelter I am using, I use my boots and my pack or a center pole or ?? To keep me on my pad. Sticking your boots on the side also keeps you from touching the side of tent and getting your bag wet
I have had the Lunar Solo for a few years. It is my favorite shelter. Bug proof, single pole, the high vestibule doesn’t bother me because it is only slightly higher than the bathtub floor. In crumby weather you just drop the pole a little and cinch up the rest and you can get it down pretty low.
Muddydogs makes a great point. The fear is always blowing out the only good buck that may be within 2 miles if you. If you are good and stealthy, nothing wrong with moving along a ridge a few times and getting multiple vantage points. The terrain can easily dictate the best plan, so make it up...
One pack. Other than the weight savings, I consider it a safety item for me. All of my “stuff” like spare parts, med kit, etc is always in the same place. I run a kifaru grabit on all my packs. Helps finch up small for hunt mode. Some of the big bags are just bulky to wrap up for hunt mode. I...
Don't discount the mid morning stretch. Be in area where you can see a few saddles or transition areas going from south to north. They will move with the sun once or twice during the day. I got the buck on my photo at 1:00PM after watching him get up and walk around at about 11:00AM. He got up...
