Another vote for the Eddie Bauer Guide pants. I have three pair (green for hunting, grey for summer hiking/scouting/cross country skiing, khaki for around town). I see mentions of durability issues. I've ran all three pair hard for four years, and just this spring turkey hunting put my first...
I was very excited to see I drew my unit with 8 points until I checked the odds and saw that the unit had jumped to needing at least 9 points this year. I must have drawn in the random (~2% odds). Still elated to have my first WY elk tag coming my way!
The wife and I run three vehicles and it works well. Small SUV for her/ Ski weekends, economic commuter for me, and a Nissan Xterra for my hunting vehicle/bad weather/hauling/borrow for friends/other car in the shop vehicle. Works well since the commuter car and Xterra are paid off and older...
Another vote for the Eddie Bauer Ascent Guide Pros. They are the only pant I wear for western outdoor activities year round. For moderate activity they are good down to freezing (for me). Below freezing I add a merino baselayer. For stationary activities (glassing), I throw puffy pants over...
Grew up in the booming metropolis of Randolph, college in Madison, then the last 8 years in the Denver area. Best of both worlds in terms of hunting and fishing in CO and WI, still love going back home!
I take half of a cheap (~$15) closed cell pad with me on pretty much any hunt or scouting mission. It has a ton of uses/functionality for not much weight. Goes under the inflatable pad at night for extra hip comfort/pad protection/R value, nice place to stand on int the floor less shelter...
Would be interested to hear how this works out for you. In a similar situation I had planned to do the same thing (handle in carry on bag, no blades) but wimped out and shipped it home for $4 to avoid any potential TSA hassle. Left some blades at WI deer camp so I can hopefully do the carry on...
The problem is when the sheaths fall off before your shoot them. Some of the WY seasons run through Nov 15 and I've seen plenty of mature bucks I didn't shoot because they had already lost one or both sheaths, leaving an ~8 inch spike instead.
Picked up four as well, even though they don't have an immediate home on my EMR II. A few thoughts that others may be interested in:
1. I have a couple light day packs/hydration packs that have a waist "belt" that is just webbing. These could slip over nicely and add some functionality.
2...
I use a cheap (~$15) closed cell foam pad, cut in half. usually roll it up to sit on a rock, or spread out for more of a lay back/lounging position. At night, it goes under the middle of my air pad to act as extra abrasion/punction resistance. I take this little foam half-pad with me for...
The saddle is too "bright" kahki for my liking in a hunting pant (I wear a pair in this color for casual wear). The aged brass looks even bolder. I hunt in the green pair, and backpack in the summer in the dark smoke colored pair.
I have a Rab 1/2 zip PS that is my go-to skiing or late season hunting mid-layer. Really like the properties a lot, just a little too warm for early-through-mid season hunting.
I've done one professional photo shoot for a new whiskey bar that was opening, and the drinks were all free. I'm pretty sure the quality of the pics were on a bell curve relative to the amount I drank. However, it actually was a lot of fun, even though it was definitely awkward at first. My...
I use this cheap Allen shell holder with a bungee flap to secure my ammo: Allen Buttstock 8 Round Rifle Shell Holder with Cover Nylon Mossy Oak Break Up 2059 - 2069 - 026509020691 Works really well. I really like having 6 extra rounds handy "just in case". Also, if i'm going to carry the weight...
