I’ve found myself doing the “freeze whole quarters in game bags” more and more frequently the past few years. No ill effects, but it does hang over my head until it’s thawed and fully processed. Given the option, I’m more likely to process hind quarters fresh and freeze the fronts (since it will...
If the owner is listed as an LLC, search for a registered agent of that LLC. Another data point that can lead to a “real person” on the other end of the line.
A five gallon bucket will work fine and won’t melt at 140 degrees. If you can find a more oval or rectangular bucket it will work better for deer and elk down the road, but antelope skull is small enough that even a round 5 gallon bucket will work.
Had an interesting learning experience this year. Did the black bag trick to get the sheaths to pop off. But, I didn’t have the time to sous vide then skull so just left it in the bag for a month. This was unskinned, lower jaw on, no prep work done beside pulling sheaths. It stunk bad for a few...
I’ve had an ‘05 SE since ‘11, about to turn 200k. Over all reliability has been great, with the glaring exception of the SMOD cooking the trans. Bit the bullet and had the trans rebuilt and radiator replaced at 130k. Definitely sucked, but I feel good that those two components are newer/less...
We have a Grand Highlander. It definitely drives/feels bigger than a regular Highlander, but the same turbo 4 delivers plenty of power with minimal turbo lag in the Grand. Zero complaints from an acceleration or transmission/shiftpoint perspective.
Definitely necessary in my opinion. Tests have been done to prove no POI changes. I like to use red or orange electrical tape, nice to make the end of the barrel extra visible.
I always sleep in whatever I was wearing setting up camp/making dinner/relaxing in. The added insulation of the bag is just enough to account for inactivity and temps dropping overnight. Might not be perfect, but appreciate being ready to roll in the morning.
felt very fortunate this morning when results came out. NR antelope buck tag in the special, antelope doe tag, and two deer doe tags. The rest of my extended group of ~dozen buddies struck out on all manner of NR deer and antelope tags. Already have a few signed up to tag along just to have a...
Looking forward to seeing how the new Special prices impacted the pronghorn buck draw. My buddies think I’m goofy for putting in special for my first choice. If I don’t draw that, they will think I’m insane when they found out I put in for a second choice at that price….
I’d suggest being aware of pressure from other open seasons for a given unit (elk/upland birds/bear/moose/pronghorn/small game, etc), as well as recreational hiking pressure and presence is useful. Speaking from a Colorado resident viewpoint, I know of guys who thought they would have the woods...
Individual quarters are no problem. The pack/frame can handle over 100lbs, the suggested 80lbs pertains more to the potential of limitations of the 24” frame relative to load lifter height and adjustment range. I use the 357 as my primary day hunting pack, knowing it can handle a heavy first...
I do something similar, but just use regular gallon zip lock bags instead. Then they serve double duty as heart/tenderloin bags (since those are the first things I’ll cut up so easier to grab in their own bag). Also, I do one gallon ziplock for just kill kit (gloves, knife, extra blades, pen...
My (wife’s) dog is the least “dog” dog I’ve ever seen. 9 lb Italian Greyhound-Chihuahua mix. Rail thin, tall and lanky, terrible anxiety, hates going outside, refuses walks, sleeps under the cover exclusively, always cold, basically not a real dog. But he will sit in the garage shivering for...
Eddie Bauer Guide Pros are my go to shorts. They come in two lengths and numerous colors, including some camo and patterns. Zippered low profile cargo pockets on each thigh.
Occasionally I’ll wear dedicated running shorts with built in liner if trying to cover straight trail miles quickly (pack...
I rotate based more on type of hunt than strictly season. Day hunts =.357 mag. Multi day hunts = EMR II. The ENR II was the do it all for years, but have really appreciated adding the smaller .357 for day hunts /scouting.
Like most of WY, winter has not been good to them. Quote from a sixth generation rancher in the unit, “worst winter on their place in 70 years”. Might be local to their ranch, but it’s a pretty small unit.
Have an ‘05 Xterra (basically identical SUV version of the Frontier) with 190k in it, very happy with it in stock form. Definitely sits more upright than a Tacoma, more comfortable on longer drivers ( for me at least) to have your legs down like a standard truck, vs out in front of you in a...
