    Pistol hunting

There's a weapons restricted (bow/handgun/shotgun) area near me that's full of whitetail. I picked up a 44 barrel for my Contender a few weeks ago and am planning on spending some time in there next year.

    Montana Rut

It's on where I am; saw a doe Sunday just after sunset with a smallish buck trailing her. She was all "get away from me" and he was not listening. I was looking straight into the sunset or I might have gotten a shot, but I didn't. That said, he was about the first buck I've seen all season...

    28 Gauge

I actually found 28 gauge in Walmart a couple of weeks ago for under $13/box so grabbed a couple. I like my 28 or .410 for mountain grouse.

    Handgun Hunters?

Have an 8" 44 mag barrel for my Contender on the way. Looking forward to using it in a Wildlife Management Area for whitetails next fall. I'm sure I'll end up scoping it, my eyes aren't as good with irons as they used to be.

    Kidney stone

Kidney stone: check Vomited from the pain: check Nurse asked for a urine sample: check Dilaudid IV: check, plus the wife having to remind me to breathe because I kept stopping. Went home from the ER and laid on the couch for a couple of days, on drugs and in pain. Woke up at 0200 giggling like...

    What's your favorite caliber?

For deer, I mainly use a 6mm Remington throwing 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. Works just dandy on Montana mule deer and antelope; I haven't actually taken a whitetail with it yet.

    I Found A Full Quiver.

I was out for a hike and noticed a little fork-horn shed. When I picked it up, lying on the ground directly underneath it was an old fixed blade knife with the leather washer handle rotted away. It's on my workbench somewhere; someday I'll get around to putting a new handle on it.

Anyone else get a new pup this year?

Haven't had a bird dog for quite a while but this little ball of fire showed up in September.

    Favorite Instant Pot Recipes?

Mac and cheese. Chicken Tikka Masala. Heck, hard boiled eggs. Pasta. I tried one the other night that went like this: 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (thawed, not frozen) 1 jar marinara sauce, whatever kind you like. Salt the chicken thighs, then dump them in the pot. Pour the...

    Cartridge Choice

6mm Remington / 95 Nosler BT is my usual choice, but no luck in the draw this year.

    Let's see those 375's

Several years ago a buddy gave me 50 pieces of 375 H&H brass and a couple hundred bullets. Sounded like a good excuse for a new rifle to me! I'm a sucker for Ruger No. 1's so I found a lightly used 1H for a decent price, but that's as far as I've gone with it. I need to work up a load and do...

    Lasik vs PRK Surgery

I had Lasik in 2003 which has been great. 54 years old, still have 20/20 left and 20/30 right...but I need readers now and tying a fly on is pure luck without them! Really, one the best things I've ever done.

    Lady Luck

Opening day was last Saturday and I happened to be the first person into the area I wanted to hunt. There's a fork with closed gates across the roads that go into two little drainages. As I was getting my gear on a young couple pulled in; they were adamant about not ruining my hunt and took...

    Favorite deer catridge/rifle.

Most years I grab my 6mm Remington Ruger No. 1 for deer or antelope, but the 7mm Mag is getting the nod for everything this year. It's my dad's 1965 Remington 700 that I've updated with a synthetic stock, new trigger, and decent glass. Every time I think I need a new rifle, I look at those two...

    Miles City

Another vote for the Black Iron. Mexico Lindo is pretty good, too. If you're into chinese buffet, the New Hunan is alright, but my wife used to call it "the singed cat". You pays your money and you takes your chances.
