Perform multiple functions on the same piece of brass while only handling that piece of brass once, i.e. decap, size, neck expand or seat then crimp. Also I can have multiple cartridges worth of dies setup at one time on the same turret. Considerably more efficient way to work vs placing and...
Also, invest in neck mandrel dies and remove you decapping assemblies from your sizing dies. Decap using a universal decapper, size, and then use the appropriately sized neck expander mandrel. My SDs are always single digits doing it this way, even on the big magnum cartridges.
Looking back, I wish I would have just purchased all of the items separately instead of a kit. That way I could have actually gotten what I wanted from the start instead of spending money again upgrading things here and there. At the same time, I'm not entirely certain I knew what I wanted /...
Not sure if you interested in down but the Stone Glacier chilkoot is an incredible sleeping bag. I wouldn't call it stretchy but it is very roomy. I like to be able to move around a lot without getting tangled up in my bag and the room in the Chilkoot is really nice, plus the differential cut...
Take this for what it's worth I suppose as I've never had any of my bulls officially measured, just the criteria on what makes me happy to go into taxidermy debt. The main four things I look for when I'm specifically wanting a big caribou and not just a meat bull and trying to field judge them...
I've known people that used vegetable oil in their saws when cutting ice on lakes and such so they don't get bar oil in the lake. Not sure of the long term effects though.
When it comes to taking apart animals, I just work the joints with a knife to take them apart and avoid cutting bones...
I'm partial to 7mm for all things mountain hunting and never once felt under gunned when shooting grizz either. That said I've done plenty critter shooting with 6.5CM and now carry a 6.5 PRC. Now I'm probably going to build a 7 PRC and hand the 6.5 down to the wife.
Moose hunting the road system is a zoo. I have more privacy at my house then I would if I were to partake in the mass migration of city dwellers into moose country. Pullouts are like miniature trailer parks with all the campers and RVs. It can be done, you just need patience and a realistic...
I think the access bag is a must have depending on how you pack your gear. My first hunt with an SG Sky Talus I didn't have it and with meat, horns and cape strapped down tight, I found it difficult to get to my fleece cap, hoodie, puffy or other clothing as it was necessary to unbuckle straps...
I've been watching the weather for the Brook's and the Wrangell's because I'm indecisive now after the fed closure in 24A. Looks like it's going to a wet one regardless which range I pick. Can only hope the clouds stay high enough to allow adequate glassing at this point.
OR croc gaiters for me. The only time I've ever damaged a pair was when I fell during a goat hunt and my crampon on one foot found the meaty portion of my calf on the other leg No gaiters I've ever seen would hold up to that. I have something like 7 sheep hunts on my current pair and the under...
I understand that part, I'm only looking to clarify that it seems there is more federal land to the east of the Sag in 26B versus west of it. My go to spot in 24A is a no go now due to this ridiculous decision. This, just like the other b.s. closures made by the feds, seems to do nothing more...
My first bull caribou was while on a fly out sheep hunt. The weather turned to crap and we were socked in for 5 days. Laying in my tent restless around midnight or so on the last day of the hunt, I heard the rain stop. Excited to stretch my legs I emerged from my tent in my underwear to see the...
I've always been anti bipod because I don't like carrying things that only provide one function. I recently ran across the Spartan Davros system and that seems really appealing to me for sheep and all other hunts but wanted some feed back from other lightweight mountain hunters. I'm leaning...
When it comes to red meat, my family exclusively lives on moose, bear, sheep, caribou and the occasional mtn. goat. The only exception is when we eat at a restaurant. the only meat we purchase at the store is bacon, chicken and the occasional pork ribs or butt for the smoker. It's gotten to the...
