I quit using it. I just didn't find that the quality justified the price. I found it required slightly less prep than Hornady, but a lot more than Norma or Lapua.
Born and raised in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Reside in Whitehorse, Yukon now.
Fun fact: my dad took me along goose hunting when I was 6 months old. His auto 5 spit an empty that burned my forearm and he tried unsuccessfully to hide it from my mom.
Sadly I don't see the border opening for the fall. Our federal government has seriously botched vaccine procurement and at the pace we're going we may all be vaccinated by 2022. The Yukon and the NWT will still be vaccinated ahead of the rest of the country, but the federal government decides...
I had used a couple of external frame packs in the past (Cabelas, Bull pac, and even a trapper nelson) for packing animals and they certainly weren't the most comfortable. One of the first years I guided for moose in the Yukon I was paired with a guy who was using a Barney's. He let me use it...
Sounds fishy. I'm originally from Saskatchewan, and some of my family are from the Cutknife area. I would think this is a canned hunt or on a reserve, there are no outfitters allowed to guide for moose around Cutknife, and no Saskatchewan outfitters are allowed to guide for mule deer as these...
I haven't tried RL16 either, but I have used RL17 and 19 quite a bit. I've had really good results with 57.2 gr of RL17 underneath a 175gr Barnes LRX in my 06 lately.
I absolutely love the 7x57. I have an old mauser that my great grandfather brought with him from Germany on March 17th, 1928. Also always on the prowl for a winchester featherweight in 7x57.
I used to guide in the Yukon, was even lucky enough to win the Yukon Outfitters Association's belt buckle one year for guiding the biggest caribou taken in the Yukon. There are quite a few outfitters up here that have decent caribou in their area, as well as a lot of the operations just on the...
I bought a pair a couple of years ago, and they've stood up fairly well from some fairly tough pack outs.. They're not the stiffest boot and they fit narrower than other German made Meindl's. I've found the German Meindl's are typically a little better built than the Cabela's Meindl's. When I...
For me the badger occupies the sort of temperature rating I only occasionally need. For summer scouting/backpacking in the Yukon the alpinlite works great, and I use it up until the end of September. With the badger's rating of -12 C, it's too warm for the summer and early hunting season and...
I've slept in my alpinlite down to -12 to -13 C (have to check what that is Fahrenheit). I've been using an Exped downmat 7, and the only layering I've done in those temperatures was a light merino t-shirt (I am a warm sleeper).
Currently own both. For reference I'm 6ft1, 192 lbs. The construction on both of them is awesome. However, I use my alpinlite probably 95% of the time. It seems warmer than it's temperature rating. I don't find much difference in the internal space between the two bags. I do notice the...
Adding a Hilleberg Anjan 2 GT to the tent collection since the girlfriend has decided to come along hunting this year. Looking like I'm going to have to spring for some new boots as well for this season.
I have used it in the past in my 308 with very good results. When Wholesale Sports in Canada closed I managed to pick up 20 lbs of Varget for cheap, so I've been playing with that lately.
While I use my havalon for a lot of the work with moose, I find I still like a fixed blade for the initial cuts through the hide along the back. For this I've used a KOA pronghorn hunter, it holds an edge really well and I can put a lot of pressure on the handle. If i'm not real limited on...
