As far as the elk, moose deal, I’d find something other than a .243. If i had no other options I’d go for a bonded or mono bullet. But there’s lots of options out there and if you’re set on a smaller caliber/lower recoiling I’d look into something shooting a 140 grain bullet. .270, 6.5, 7mm-08.
I’ve never shot anything Barnes but you’ll have to look at velocities for it at 400 yards. Copper bullets are a lot tougher than led and at lower velocities don’t expand as much. The .243 is a very fun caliber. It’s inherently accurate, shoots extremely flat, with minimal recoil. You can pop...
I have a savage 11 in .243 that has a preference for hornady ammo. I’ve not shot anything Nosler through it but the BT have gotten my interest. But with all that said the rifle likes the 95gr SST’s in particular. It will clover leaf at 100 yards if i do my part. The 100gr interlocks shoot 1” at...
I have the pop up 28 and love it as a day pack. Where i hunt in Arkansas I’m prone to get a little deep in the ozarks. I always had to debate on whether i wanted to use my big badlands pack as a day pack or leave the deer car in the truck and go back and get it. With the pop up 28, it doesn’t...
You can find the Burris fullfield E1’s for under $200, and in my opinion, that’s an absolute steal. That’s a lot of good scope for under $200. Great glass, great quality set it and forget it scope. E1 reticle is small and only complaints i hear about it. I actually like the compact reticle, and...
I have a savage 11 (110 action) in .243 and a 110 VSX in 30-06. My .243 has ejection issues and it only happens to me when i try to quickly reload (for follow up shots). It’s a simple $23 fix with an aftermarket ejector kit, I’ve just not got around to it. My 30-06 has had no ejection issues at...
Fast speeds aren’t friendly to SST bullets. The purpose of the SST is rapid expansion and dumping energy into the animal. High MV on them results in a fragmented bullet at close ranges. With that being said i shoot 100gr sst out of a .243. They’re extremely accurate and cruising over 3k fps. I...
As someone that wears gloves every day at work, dexterity and durability don’t go hand in hand. This pertains to leather work gloves. A plain deer skin leather glove will have decent dexterity, but poor durability. A durable leather glove will have poor dexterity.
As far as hunting gloves for...
I’m a fan of the .243, i have a savage 110 that is extremely accurate with factory 95gr SST’s. It’ll shoot 1.5” groups at 200 yards. You just got to remember that it’s a very fast, small bullet and to keep it off the shoulder. I had a permit hunt this past weekend here in Arkansas and shot a...
My dad and I doubled up one a couple bucks opening evening in SE Montana. My second Mule deer and his first one. Was an awesome experience. Deer were few and far in between and 2 other guys in our group didn’t punch their tag, but we managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
I just started using the 175gr in my savage 110 30-06. At 200 yards i can get a 1.5” group out of them if I’m on my A game. Shot a mule deer in Montana first day of rifle this year right at 200 yards. Dime size entry and a quarter size exit. Bullet hit the top part of the heart, deer made it a...
South Arkansas had an abundance of deer for a long time. Lots of leases would see 20-30 deer a sit. Then they wanted better buck hunting. The QDMA answer was they need a better buck to doe ratio. So here’s 6 doe tags for each member. Shoot the does down for a better ratio, then Bam! Where are...
Well this is good news! I just applied for a Montana deer tag lol. I went for the first time in 2018 and didn’t have any problem finding deer. I know that the numbers fluctuate greatly up there, but being in Arkansas I’m far removed from keeping up with it! Oh well, still gonna give it a shot if...
Old thread but i have a pair of cabelas light weight hunters which i believe are the same as the comfort light hikers, the hunters have an 8” upper though. I love these boots. I’ve had them for going on 6 years. Just wore them today on a 5 mile hike here in the ozarks, still waterproof and...
Before y’all run me ragged I’m not asking for Units, GPS, or what drainage elk are in. I’m seeking knowledge for hunting crowded OTC areas. I’m a public land hunter here in Arkansas and crowds don’t scare me, i can work around people and fight the frustrations with success. My first trip to Co...
I know there’s a lot of doubt around the .243 but i love my savage .243 because it’s boringly accurate and fun to shoot. I’ve shot everything through it and it’s crazy accurate, but it prefers hornady ammo more than anything. So i hunt with hornady products out of confidence. I’ve used 100gr...
i have an ALPS bino harness and love it, wouldn't ever give it up! Have a grenade pouch attached on the side for my range finder so its right there at an easy reach and not swinging or hanging off my body.
I just borrowed some redhead ones from a buddy and guy i went with had some KUIU gaiters. I do know his KUIU gaiters were a lot easier to put on than the redheads i borrowed. I wore them all deer season here in Arkansas too and love them. Wet grass, mud, creek crossing are a non issue and don’t...
I was in SE montana last year for my first trip out west. So my experience is minimal. Sounds like your pretty well prepared, make sure you have some leg gaiters to keep the morning dew off your pant legs! Its open country and can be tricky, 90% of our deer were found with just our binos but a...
