    Joe Rogan and Pot

Do you volunteer at your local school ever week? My wife does and sits on two committees. I have lunch with my kids at least once a week and help as a volunteer during test time each week. Benefit of being self-employed. A number of parents at local schools are growers, and I don't mean they...

North Fork Valley. Pockets of traditionally-minded people and pockets of hippies.

    Joe Rogan and Pot

Smart. I'm not against marijuana per se, because I don't believe anyone has completed THE DEFINITIVE scientific study yet. Might turn out to be really good at healing certain things. I don't know. But, I don't like marijuana culture. I've seen more than ten stoned 5-8 year-old kids show up...

The Utah delegation is like herpes.....

The interesting thing about growing up in Utah, and still having a number of family and friends over there, is seeing how willingly the people go along with what their representatives/leaders tell them. It's a cultural thing. This goes way, way back in time for the State of Utah. A long...

    CO Mulies GMU 18/181

I spent over 10 years hiking/hunting 181. A lot of mule deer in the 8,500-10,000 foot range on low ridge lines. They'll bed down on those little ridges where they can look down in three directions. If all you wanted was a doe they're easy to find down low on the national forest. I typically...

    Weight

22 pounds for a three day bivy scouting trip or hunt during warmer months in Colorado, June to mid-September. Includes three full days of food and a liter of water. Add 10 pounds for September hunts including Swaro 8x32s, Knight Ultra-Lite muzzleloader, few extra bullets, powder, tools, and...

How far can you hike to get away from crowds?

+1. Get off trail. Sometimes the trail system will get you part of the way there. Some of my best areas don't involve any formal trailheads or trails.

Kifaru vs Stone Glacier - Specifically fit and frame comparison

I love my Kifaru Hunting Frame. Great quality, comfortable. My main bag is a Markhor bag. Love it - it's just a simple bag you throw stuff in. Also have the Mountain Warrior bag for extended trips or cold weather trips. I'll say this, I'm not a fan of some of the newfangled bag designs I'm...

How far can you hike to get away from crowds?

Straight-line distance on the map is one thing. How far you actually have to walk to that spot is another.

    Sunglasses

I always backpack with good polarized sunglasses. Eyes are too important. Oakley Fives (standard issue). Great for hunting or fly fishing. I accidentally left them at a remote timberline lake in the Gore Range a couple years ago where the fishing for cutthroat is always on. Bought myself a...

James you know there's no one else for me.

    Donnie Vincent fans?

Agreed. Hunting is getting a better reputation thanks to "mountain athletes" and great photography.

    Donnie Vincent fans?

Me thinks some of you are going to end up in a bromance. The videos are very well done. Great videography. And he does have that Hollywood look. Not a bad representative for our sport, but seemingly narcissistic. Heh

Recc backpacking rod combo set for trout in Colorado

For my money this is the classic high country backpacking rod. I tried the Tenkara thing for a couple years and while it was fun, I prefer having the extra reach and flexibility of a real rod & reel combo. Tenkara is, however, an excellent teaching tool for new fly anglers.

Should Western Hunting Expo take a stand for Public Lands?

Again, confirmation bias. Let's see some hard statistics.

Should Western Hunting Expo take a stand for Public Lands?

Confirmation bias? Maybe you should show us some statistics.

Should Western Hunting Expo take a stand for Public Lands?

It's a real shame that hunting-specific companies are letting the general outdoor industry (Patagonia, Black Diamond, etc.) take the real lead in this fight. Hunting companies should be leading those boycotts. I grew up in Ogden, Utah and I love to see Utah benefit financially from the outdoor...

What Podcasts are you listening to?

I listen to a variety of podcasts. As has been said by others, my only pet peeve is those podcasts that use the entire episode as marketing material. I don't mind dedicated, short commercial breaks. Podcast hosts are entitled to make a living. But a podcast for the sole purpose of selling...
