I use a really cheap nylon hunting vest that I paid less than $5 for. I run the shoulder straps through the arm holes and attach the waist strap around the mid section of the pack. It has worked well and also helps to shed moisture.
My favorite is a older Integral Designs Sil-dome 2 person floorless tarp tent. I leave it open when warm and closed-up when it is colder. It is easy to put up and take down and is fairly lightweight. Camping in colder conditions with a bunch of gear, I rely on my Seek Outside 6-man tipi with...
Acc, I've hunted with Dellis and his lovely wife for a couple of year. He and his staff know the area well and were always willing to share their wealth of knowledge of the area. His horse and mule stock are the extremely well kept and I don't think I have ever seen any outfitter more...
the longest I've been hunting/camping is 7 days. Yep, Wet Wipes 2 or 3 times a week is pretty much all I need to feel comfortable and not offend others in my hunting party during a hunt. It is hard to bathe camping out at 10,000+ feet when the temps are hovering around 15 to 30 degrees.
ACC, my hunting buddy and I hunted 2nd rifle season in the same area in 2011 and again in 2013. The last year, we hunted near the Cowboy Camp area just off of Peterson Creek. It was crowded….so much so that we were on a first-name basis with the 6 other hunters that camped within a half mile of...
I'm doing my 5th straight elk hunt in CO this year. Get in decent physical shape and, at your age, you should do fine. I started elk hunting CO at age 59 and at 62, me and my hunting buddy did a full backpack hunt….thank goodness we were not successful as I don't know that we could have packed...
I bought a pair of last year's (updated 1st generation) Kanabs. When I wear them out, I may consider the newest generation which will probably be called Kanabs 3.0+. Love the pants and see no reason to update at this time.
I'm with E-2 on First Lite clothing. Their Kanabs are quality pants and sound perfect for the temps you will be hunting. Base layers are not as important to me and I usually choose Smart Wool merino medium to heavy weight tops and bottoms although the Fist lite stuff looks very nice as well.
I have a pair of LL Bean's Gore-Tex Upland Game pants that I have used for elk hunting in the CO Rockies and on rainy day's hunting deer elsewhere. I was concerned that thy might be a bit noisy but they were not. I highly recommend them for wet or snowy weather.
I hunted the southern part GMU 81 during the 2nd rifle season last year. We actually had some fairly pleasant weather even though we camped at around 11,000 ft. We had light rain and mist a couple of days and a couple of periods of sleet but, no snow. I hunted the 2nd rifle season in GMU 80...
If you have your own camping equipment you can find some pretty decent deals out there. I have my own Tipi and wood stove and everything else that it takes to make it for a week in the boonies. Last year, my hunting buddy and I found an outfitter that packed us in by horseback (mules for the...
Husky390, when I hunt elk in CO, or deer in OK in moderately cold temps, I regularly use my Kenetrek Mountain Extremes with 400 gram insulation. These boots are comfortable and work well. But, for temps like you are talking about, I have found no warmer boots than my Baffin Control Max boots...
I've camped and hunted deer in S. Dakota, and have camped at 11,000 ft hunting elk in the 2nd rifle season in CO. I have been quite pleased (and warm) using my Mountain Hardware Phantom 0 degree 800 fill down bag. I will add that ground cover and pad are an important part of any sleep system.
My Longhunter Standard G2 pack with cargo seat and grab-it in foliage were all a good match, color wise. It is probably my favorite color for a hunting pack.
My hunting buddy and I seam-sealed our Seek Outside 6-man tipi on the inside only using a single tube of GE Silicon Sealant straight from the tube, using our fingers. It withstood 4 different mountain rainstorms (2 fairly heavy storms) in CO during a 2nd rifle season elk hunt a couple of weeks...
For use around hunting camp, I use a Coghlan's 21" folding saw which works well. Replacement blades are readily available at hardware stores. http://www.campingsurvival.com/foldingsaw.html It is a bit large for a backpack saw and doesn't have the utility of my small 13 inch Gerber folding saw...
My hunting buddy and I have a large Seek Outside stove for our SO 6-man tipi. This year we will be using a Coghlans folding saw and a Fiskars X11 on next week's CO elk hunt. I've been using this combo for the past 4 or 5 months around the house and they are excellent individually, and work...
I don't have a Kifaru Oval but I do have a Seek Outside large Ti Stove and can setup the stove in less than 5 minutes without tools of any kind. I've never used a Kifaru Oval stove but I have to say, I like the ease of setup, adequate cooking surface and warmth provided the SO large stove. It...
Like most, I wear them in wet weather or when elk hunting in CO in snow. Beyond that, I only wear them (snake gaiters) when hog hunting in rattle snake country in SW OK.
