    Living in Alaska

I am SO glad there is not whitetail deer or turkey hunting up here! Moose is close enough to the "back east deer hunt" mentality that I personally can deal with. I love it when folks talk that way of the "limited" hunting opportunity up here in Alaska. Glad to see them leave the state as well.

    Barrett Fieldcraft update

Used Fieldcrafts (especially the popular calibers) are drying up fast as Barrett decided to end production on them for an undetermined time.

    Favorite Walnut/Blued Rifle

A Winchester model 70 Featherweight is a super nice blued/wood stocked rifle. I also like the Kimber 84L Super Grades as well.

Hunting the Oldest of a Species

For Thin Horn sheep it is a 100 percent fact! Harvesting older rams is a positive for future conservation numbers. Our full curl, 8 year old, or broken horns requirements, in most of Alaska dall sheep hunts for legality have very little impact on the overall population of Dall's. A legal ram...

    Bullet styles for the yukon/AK

165 or 168gr TTSX at the velocities the 300WSM will push them at for a combo do everything bullet. 180gr if it were a bonded (accubond/interbond etc). You will not be undergunned what so ever.

    Bullet styles for the yukon/AK

If Mtn grizzlies are your "secondary" animal I would not change from your current set-up if that 130gr was a bonded bullet (I am assuming it is the Swift Scirocco) or the 127gr Barnes LRX. I have killed more mtn grizzles with my 264WM's, 270's, 7mm's sheep rifles than any of my 30 cal and up...

    Barrett Fieldcraft 280AI?

I did just that! Just got finished with the machine work. I plan to CeraKote soon. I put a Lilja #2 on it which is the EXACT same contour as the factory long action Barrett Fieldcraft barrels. Just ensure whoever does your work to take precise measurements from the factory barrel...

    .280 AI Tikka build reloading

I know you said 160+ but I shoot the Barnes 145gr LRX or the 140gr TTSX in most of my 7mm's from 7-08 through my 7STW's. Pounds right through all species of game available to you in the Brooks Range including interior grizzly at any reasonable distances. You will NOT be under gunned what so...

Any Aftermarket Stocks or Modifications for Nosler M48 to lighten it up?

Any rifle builder specializing in bolt rifle builds worth a damn can modify pretty much any fiberglass/foam filled stock to fit nicely most bolt actions with the right amount of epoxy and release agent. I have the same rifle you have but in 28 Nosler. Agreed it is heavy, I just have not...

Kimber Mountain ascent dipped stock bedding?

The Mtn Ascent stocks vary so much. Some have the wrap going over into the bedded area and some don't. But no matter you have to remove (mill, dermal, wrasp, chisel) at least 1/8 inch of material to be filled back in with bedding compound. That plumbers 2 inch black tape normally comes in...

Kimber Mountain ascent dipped stock bedding?

I build about 15 or so Kimbers every year. Montana and Mtn Ascent stocks. I bed full contact from about 1 inch of the barrel shank all the way to the rear guard screw tang area. I put ONE layer of 3M blue painters tape on the front, sides and bottom of the recoil lug. I take the entire...

How much can I expect to pay for a AK moose hunt?

I'm assuming you are referring to guided moose hunts because you talked about sheep as well which require guiding but moose don't. Of all the game animals in Alaska if hiring a guide, moose have the LARGEST swing in prices. I've seen some under $10K all the way up to $25K. It will all...

    Kimber barrel weight

Easily done conversion. IMO I would take out the goofy Kimber 8400 "step" style barrel shank and just go with about a 1 inch long straight "normal" barrel shank. Ensure you let your builder know prior to lathe work beginning.

    Kimber barrel weight

Your barrel shank will start out at 1.050". Your builder will thread a tenon/chamber barrel. If you get a Lilja they offer a 100 percent factory contour for a Kimber 84L. No extra fee. If you already have a barrel it must be machined down to that 1.050" diameter for the shank.

Who to go with for Grizzly & Dall combo?

The 4000+ number resident hunters is a little misleading don't you think? With the free permit any resident gets who wants one the actual number is less than half that who actually hunt. In 2018 5200+ residents/non residents had permits but only 1900+ resident/non residents actually hunted...

    Thinking about rifle scope change

Ive taken 14 rams personally, guided 29 more. All but 6 have been with either Leupold VX3 2.5-8's or the 4.5-14 all of them with the CDS dialing. Most are in the 200-400 yd range. Some closer a couple farther. I dialed to every one of them and have NEVER had issues in the backcountry or the...

    Which fieldcraft?

I have a 280ai Fieldcraft! Just finished it. Very simple conversion from any of the long actions available. Bought a donar rifle of this site a year ago in 30/06. Rifle was a tack driver but I trued the action face, action lugs, bolt face and bolt lugs. Chambered a Lilja #2 (which is an...
