Mine did too. On both fronts and on multiple rifles, until it didn’t. Game of statistics, we’re all out here trying to make choices that minimize the chance of failure, knowing it can’t be eliminated. My reaction was similar to yours. Just don’t want to see you lose game over it, that’s all.

In my experience, in my observation of one other shooter, and in the consensus developed on this thread, it appears that Talley direct mount aluminum rings have a higher than average rate of shifting and breakage.

Phrased differently… the magic is in the hit probability and the terminal effects. While the latter won’t change, both Talleys and the VX are stacking the deck against reliable hits. Wish you luck on the experiment, keep us posted.

First, find out if your system holds a decent cone for 10 rounds. If it does, no need to do anything else.
If it doesn’t, ask yourself if you’re really ok with that. Assuming you have to be ok with it for some reason, (perhaps budget), then shoot small groups at the same point of aim until you...
Availability of inexpensive great consistent ammo, 50 state legality, and a barrel life so long that the gun’s stable period is virtually indefinite. All adds up to reliability.

I hate to derail the thread, but could you point me to a thread which describes the characteristics of this optic? Or list them quickly in reply? (weight, price, reticle, turrets, ordering instructions etc.)
Thanks,

Hell, I'll bite. A few clarifying questions:
1) What magnifications at what ranges are you using?
2) Do those mags change for steel vs animals?
3) What cartridges are you shooting at these mags?
4) What is your average reticle deflection in mils, observed after the recoil cycle prior to...
1) 30% of the rounds will be spent during low precision positional applications like seated unsupported, where bulk ammo is appropriate (assuming the zero isn't wildly different).
2) 70% of the rounds will be spent prone, supported, or at distance where BC and group size matters. I find 77 AAC...
A caution on that particular stock. Depending on your hand size, the grip may or may not be usable. For some, it fits fine. And quality overall is high. However if you are expecting the Tikka version of a Clymr style hybrid vertical grip you will not find similar ergonomics.
