Allterra Carbon Hunter 3 Review

I just ordered the new Carbon Hunter 3 stock from @Team AllTerra.
I really like the negative comb concept, though I have never shot a rifle with one. What attracted me to the Carbon Hunter 3 is that it has a molded-in grip on the fore-end and grip. I have held the CH2 at shows, and it feels nice. I can't wait to shoot my rifle with this stock.

They offer a plethora of inlets you can choose from which really makes this stock more custom fit and finish. I also chose to send them my barreled action for their bedding service. I sent them a 25 creed with a preferred carbon barrel on a Bighorn Origin action. The inlets range from the highest-end action to a stock REM700, so anyone can take their grandpa's old rifle and give it new life. You would be surprised by the difference a well-bedded stock can make to a stock rifle.

I shipped them the barreled action yesterday, so when I get the stock, I will update you on the turnaround time and my first impressions.

A caution on that particular stock. Depending on your hand size, the grip may or may not be usable. For some, it fits fine. And quality overall is high. However if you are expecting the Tikka version of a Clymr style hybrid vertical grip you will not find similar ergonomics.

I believe they stated in one of the product vids the latest trigger reach had been shortened some from the previous version. Maybe @Team AllTerra could clarify ?

I have 3 of the tikka version. They shoot fantastic. The grip is more open than the current vertical grip rage for sure, but it’s not like a typical sporter stock either. I don’t find it too open or too large for my use. The quality is absolutely top notch. Bare carbon , no flaws, 28oz with a 1/2” pad. The negative comb manages recoil quite well. I was able to spot my shot @ 50 yds with my 280 AI free handed last year…. Like it never even recoiled. Only downside for the average guy is you need to pillar bed it yourself. They have a great video walking you through it. If I ever get a REM 700 pattern action I would for sure consider the Hunter 3

Correct @MooreAK - The trigger reach has been slightly shortened on the CH3 versus the Tikka / Original Carbon Hunter. Customer feedback on that dimension being too long was rare, but internally we chose to shorten it up a touch for good measure (so to speak) since the project required all new modeling anyway.

It worked out great! Really good video. In particular, giving the proper pillar trim lengths and epoxy ratios was super helpful. The two step process for first bedding pillars and bottom metal and then the action was also key for non pros.

This should help show the grip/reach difference between the original Carbon Hunter (Tikka) and the Carbon Hunter 3. The front of the CH3 grip is about 5/16" closer to the trigger. Overall grip shape and angle are very similar.

I'm pretty sure it can be the shape of a beer can and be usable. Maybe the correct verbiage is "I don't prefer the grip"

I sent my action off on Monday and received it back along with the stock the following Wednesday! That is a short turnaround time, especially with shipping both ways.

My first impression of the stock can be summed up in one word: "quality." The bedding job turned out amazing, and they also bedded my Hawkins bottom metal. I like the feel of the grip, and the built-in texture feels good on the hand.

I can't wait to shoot this rifle and compare group sizes with a chassis. I am also curious about the felt recoil and will follow up with a negative comb. I will try to video through the scope to see if there is any tangible difference with muzzle jump.

Is that Damascus bronze color? Looks great!

Been considering this stock, looks perfect with the Hawkins Hunter and SRS balance flush to each other. I have that combo on one rifle and it's great to rest the magazine base and the arca on a bag. On the McMillans, the integrated arca and a Hawkins hunter make a "stair step". Probably just my OCD, but when putting together a custom rifle, that's kind of like building a house and realizing you put outlets in the wrong spot, it can nag you, LOL!
