I have an extra class license. My interest is for emergency preparedness. I have HF rigs and such for that.
I never really expected my hunting friends to get amateur licenses. For basic walkie talkie type communication, as I posted above, I think MURS is the way to go. No license, 5 watt...
It will depend on which frequencies you operate on. If you try using amateur or public safety frequencies, someone is likely to track you down.
If you run them on FRS or GMRS freqs, you may get away with it.
I have an amateur license, and I have experimented with Baofengs legally. I find...
I’ve been using Icebreaker socks on my outdoor adventures the last few years, and they have been solid. I need a few additional pairs of socks, so I am trying Darn Tough this season.
I have never had a combo gun like you described, but if I came across a deal on an old school European drilling with a shotgun and a center fire rifle barrel, it would be hard to pass up.
To me one of the reasons to look at Sitka as opposed to KUIU is that I van go to the store and put my hands on it and try it on. If Sitka went DYC only, I would buy less for sure. I do like their duck hunting waders though.
Remember you need a license for GMRS, and it is UHF. I like the Motorola MURS units. Much better quality and gets you the longer range of VHF with no license required.
My son could easily shoot 308 or 6.5CM bolt guns at the age of 10. I like 308 for its all around versatility and ubiquitous ammo.
If you hand load, you can easily make reduced power loads until the kid is bigger.
For clarity, I am not sitting home while I wait for Wyoming points to accumulate. I'm hunting ID this fall. I agree OP should get in the woods if he can.
The OP did not say whether he was backpack hunting or doing a drop or base camp. If I am backpacking, I am carrying some kind of down bag for weight considerations. Otherwise, I will bring one of my Wiggy's sythetic bags. They are very well made and very warm. For my Idaho Elk hunt this fall...
Good that you are starting young. I started buying points for my 11 yo son this year, with the hope we might celebrate his HS graduation with an epic WY hunt.
I always though the encores and contenders were way too expensive for what they were. It would be a neat idea if it were cheaper then just buying another rifle.
I have a TC Omega muzzle loader that is by backup loaner. It works OK, but I like my CVA.
Best of luck to this guy. Hope he can...
If you want another rifle buy one. No need to justify it to anyone but yourself. Unlike the cool kids on rokslide, I am a big believer in always having enough gun, which to me means enough overkill that if conditions are not perfect, and I make less than perfect shot, I can still make an...
I bought two of my kids Benelli Montefeltro youth combos. It is 20 ga Monty with a 26" bbl. It comes with a 12.5" LOP stock, but there is a 14" stock in the box as well. Instead of spending money on a gun the kid will outgrow, this one is good for life. The semi-auto action also helps...
Glad you weren’t hurt, and that is some amazing customer service from Rio. Thanks for sharing. Should make anyone think twice about shooting cut shells.
