"My Garmin In Reach" Saved My Bacon Today

Was about to write those exact words. Dead mans lookout above Redfeather Colorado. That was cold and way before Garmin. OP, I too have an Inreach and have owned Spot. Glad it helped you. Thanks for sharing the story.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

That's the stuff I shot a deer and a cow elk with last season. Been reloading alot of 223 but theirs performed well on both paper and animals.

My nephew. He makes a living at it. He was on Forged in Fire several years ago and won it.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

    Thick skull, don't aim there.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

I think there's a shift from, my 30 caliber rifle shoots 1 moa all day long, makes big holes, and I don't need to shoot it much to prove it (thank God). To, my rifle shoots 1 moa all day long, makes big holes, and I shoot it all day long. It isn't expensive either. The advantage you gain as a...

The do it all self-defense pistol

Carried one 1911 or another for many years. It got to the point where I hated the weight and bulk so was leaving them home. You'll want a gun that you can shoot well and don't mind carrying. The latter idea is that it will always go with you. I bought a Glock 19 a little over 20 years ago that...

Firecreek Forge Feather Damascus. Used this year and was impressed with durability. A forged hunting/camping knife. High carbon steel. A San Mai chopper (not hunting) but same forge and I love this thing. It's been used hard and will still shave hair.

    Tikka acquired

Both grip and cheek riser are on order. Went with mountain tactical for the riser. Also need to get the scope sorted with some unknown rings. It'll shoot.

    Tikka acquired

Bought the same gun under the same sale three days ago. Working on a load for it soon. It shoots well with nosler 95 ballistic. I like it as much as my t3x 223. Stock needs work but I'll get there.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Another data point. I was butchering the offside front quarter of my Elk a few days back and found what remained of the 77 grain TMK. Lodged in the outside surface of the shoulder meat. Looks like the hide stopped it there. Shoulder meat -> one rib busted -> tumble in organ cavity (blender) ->...

    Predator Rifles! Let's See Them!

Kimber of Oregon. .223 mostly sits in the safe but I like looking at it and shooting once in awhile. It'll do the work. Sometimes I feel guilty leaving it at home. I prefer my Tikka for a wider range of game. Even my 18" 1:8 AR.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

About that cow yesterday. 77TMK. Shot high shoulder. Damage to spine, heart blown up. Lungs intact, everything rearward intact. No damage to off side shoulder meat. Damage went as far as off side ribs and pretty much stopped there. One busted rib at entry. No wonder she went hooves up, DRT...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

I knocked down a cow elk yesterday with the rokslide special and 77gr TMK. We snuck into 25 yards of the outliers in this heard. They jumped, we slowed em down a little with a cow call. Thanks MT Terry. Picked out a cow at 50 yards and hit her in the shoulder. She turned to run but just...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

150gr SST's out of a 30-06 can cause too much damage in a deer. On par with what my 77gr TMK did to this years deer. Seen it, through the scope this time. :) This has been a really fun learning experience for me. And my old neck likes low to no recoil any more. Maybe next week, a cow elk!

Anyone solo backcountry hunting over the age of 60?

I'll stop being an active 62 year old in February. We'll see how a 63 year old does. Keep on keeping on!

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

I agree with this. The deer I shot, I watched fold up like it was on TV. I have been used to the view getting bounced for a long time.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

After several days of hunting and a couple of missed opportunities I walked into this guy standing head on to me. 86 yards. Rokslide special, .223 77gn TMK from Black Hills Ammo. Placed the bullet just below his chin. Absolutely destroyed his neck. The damage biased right side. I saw the hit...
