I generally don’t bring backup gear, but I think I’m going to start leaving a spare sleeping pad in the truck after mine blew an internal seam 2 years ago on the first night of the trip. It still held air but was like sleeping on a deflated beach ball. I considered hiking out and driving back...
7 miles is do able with 4 guys, as long as everyone will pitch in. You and your hunting partner if you have one need to be able to get it back to camp though, assuming you won’t be able to get ahold of the other guys in the field.
That brings up the point that you’ll likely kill one further...
I’d rather have a poorly fitting pack than poorly fitting boots, but unfortunately you can’t just buy your way to success with either.
I started by buying several different pairs and sizes of Lowa’s, La Sportiva’s, etc, before finally determining that the Salomon Quests fit my foot the best...
Positive pressure is the only way to keep dust out from my research. I have a roof vent fan that can both push and pull air, with a plastic deflector that faces the rear.
The guys in Australia that drive hundreds of miles in fine dust pulling camper trailers claim it works great.
A middle ground if you’re shopping for a new vehicle anyways would be something like a 4 Runner. However, if you’re happy with it otherwise and can deal with the ground clearance/traction issues, I’d just get a small utility trailer.
Something like this could easily haul a couple 150qt coolers...
This reliability stuff sucks to keep hearing about. I’ve been carrying an ACR PLB as my primary concern has been having an SOS button over 2 way communication.
Having two small kids has changed that a bit now, and I’d like my wife to be able to get ahold of me in the event that something...
I think the sawyer filter issues stem from the difference between the mini and the squeeze. The mini is constantly maligned, I’ve never heard a bad thing said about the squeeze.
I don’t see how it wouldn’t, but there are a couple things to keep in mind. AK is famous for several days of crap weather leaving you socked in, so you might at least want a tarp for a place to spread out a bit.
I’d also make sure everybody is good friends and has been in at least some sort of...
I’m not saying I don’t care what happens, I’d probably still do something like click a link to email a senator and be pissed off about it happening.
However I’m not going to donate several $100 to fight it’s closure, tell everyone that will listen about it, etc, to preserve lands for people...
It’s all of the above. The total hunter number decline is based on license sales. In most of the south, grandpa was a pretty serious hunter, dad dabbled with it, and then you did it a handful of times on holidays, etc. Now dad doesn’t hunt any more, you’ve got kids and projects keeping you busy...
I don’t disagree with a certain number of tags going to residents, but that would pretty much mean OTC tags would have to go out the window. Maybe just put them up for sale a 2 days early for residents and have total caps?
The other problem that has been discussed is when states restrict the...
We all know how sensitive elk’s noses are to the scent coming directly off us, but I haven’t found much information as to the “scent trails” we leave behind.
If you’re slipping down a trail looking for a spot to stop and call, are you basically going “scorched earth”, where turning back around...
The “problem” has several sides. One is the social media, YouTube, Instagram, etc stuff trying to make a living off it, so they promote it like it’s their job, which it is. I’m not necessarily blaming the people who put out helpful information like Newberg, Jacobson, Rinella, etc, but it’s...
I have to say, while I’ve enjoyed the Gritty podcasts, the more recent ones seem to be sort of the same thing over and over. Pushing products and play by plays of hunts rather than interviewing instersting people, learning something new, and the humor that was a part of some of the older ones...
I’m a fan of the KUIU Icon Pro 1850 for day hunts, with the frame and suspension you can easily carry a climbing stand in the meat shelf, and I’ve packed out a quartered, bone in deer in one load.
Another benefit is the KUIU bags are cheap, if you wanted to pick up a larger one for backpacking...
Exactly. It’s the same as gun ownership. Don’t like guns? Fine, don’t buy one. Don’t want to leave your house? Fine, then don’t.
I’m not saying things should continue as usual with zero compromise, but things are going to be made far worse than the small number of people that die from the...
One pair of pants, 2 pairs of boxers, 2 pairs of socks and liners. Swap those out every day. No reason for more than that on the bottom besides a base layer and rain pants. Carry tenacious tape in the event of a bad rip.
I tested my KUIU attack pants thoroughly for stink before taking them...
FL guy out turkey hunting right now.
Not sure about NZ if there are no tags, season dates, restrictions, but I’ve predicted them shutting down hunting here due to law enforcement.
There’s a 500,000 acre national forest on the west side of town that last I heard was patrolled by 2 game wardens...
I use the meat shelf with TAG game bags, also don’t mind a little blood as long as it’s not all over my sleeping bag and base layers. Haven’t hunted in grizzly country yet, that might require more precaution.
If your pack looks like a horror movie, I wouldn’t be surprised if they wouldn’t let...
You might want to consider a set of the knock off max trax in the event of some heavy rain. We went in via a 4x4 rental truck with no problems, but my buddy commented that a couple sections might get dicey coming out a week later if they were fairly wet.
