How much planning do you guys do for small game?

In my younger days, I used to carry a .357 Sig whenever I was rifle hunting. If I was on my way back to the truck, with or without a deer, any squirrel that would stand still within 25 yards would earn a headshot from me. These days, all my squirrel hunting is intentional and done as a way to...

    Mountain biking for cardio?

I agree that only rucking can prepare you for rucking. A lot of it is mental preparation and confidence building. Come up with a progressive ruck training plan and stick to it. One ruck per month of 3-6-9-12-15-18- hunt - 15-12-9-6-3 should help you keep it without destroying your body. Weight...

    Favorite .270 Winchester Bullet Type/Weight

I have always been a fan of the plain old 130-grain Sierra Gameking bullets. I bought something like 700 of them 25 years ago, but never got the chance to reload many of them. Now that I am no longer in the service, I have more time to hunt and shoot, so I plan on using them up and then...

What don't I know from watching YouTube hunts?

When I was in the service, I used to make perfectly serviceable knee pads out of a pack of kitchen sponges wrapped in duct tape. Easy to insert in the holders on my cammies. Always did me well for crossing the obstacle course, shooting on the range from kneeling position, or blundering through...

    Montana Antelope

I put in for non-resident antelope in Montana this year. It's the first time I have ever applied for anything other than resident Virginia elk. I know I cannot reasonably expect to draw this year, but I am hoping for beginner's luck. The reason I put in for Montana is that I have a friend who...

I've got 20 acres in upstate ny, what would you suggest to improve it?

I would plant red oaks and apples along the edges and in clusters. Create blackberry hedges for all your fence lines. Put paths to your stands around the perimeter. Use that as a walking path every day morning and evening. Let some willows or hemlocks grow up along the creeks.

    the best 243 win bullet

I've had and seen good results with the 100-grain Sierra Gamekings. I just bought some of the 80-grain TTSX, since they have the same length, but I have not yet worked out a load for them.

    FNG from Virginia

FNG from Virginia. Family owns a farm in SWVA, which is where I learned to hunt and have done most of my hunting. I love hunting whitetails and wild turkey. I also hunt small game for practice and to bring my nieces and nephews into the sport. I have a childhood friend out in Montana, so I am...
