    2024 Antelope meatpole

We hunted eastern Wyoming. I was done in 2 hours but had 32 goats around me for the whole time. Short but fun hunt. This buck scored 74.5.

    New Sig Zulu

I bought a pair of 16x HDXs. Could not be more impressed. Prefer them to my NLs. Using them on pronghorn in two weeks.

    Archery Pronghorn

Black widows. They scare me more than the rattlers. They like blinds and dark corners. Wont kill you but sure will make you sick if bitten.

Wyo NonRes Antelope & Deer results tomorrow morning!

We were successful on group antelope NR tags. Two preference points burned but worth it.

Tundra trekking poles - which feet?

Small or large baskets both much better than no baskets. Bring an extra set for your group. You'll end up breaking at least one pole. We did on our last two caribou hunts in Units 23 and 26.

    Ptarmigan

Fishing rod. Last two trips to NBR we shot ptarmigan for camp meat with our 10 mm bear pistols. That said, we had fishing rods along - there was no fishing but a million ptarmigan and they were fun to stalk with a sidearm. MTC.

Those with more than one dog

My sires in chronological order have been: Boo ( US National Champ), Mully ( US Amateur Champ) and Champ (2022 highpoint dog). I breed to my own dams out of Kenwood line. All pups have been promising dogs so far and excellent gun dogs when not trialing.

Those with more than one dog

I bred, own and hunt three field trial Labradors. I always have two in my truck when hunting waterfowl or upland birds. When the oldest grandma could still hunt (she's 13 now), I would have three in the truck. On long hard days, it is optimal for me to change out dogs, and I can pick and...

Western and NW AK weather alert

I am really glad we got out of Kotzebue on September 8th. The forecast all this week looks awful if you are in the field.

    Kotzebou hunters

Our bear fences (yes we have two) are tested and packed. Hoping for some OK weather. Flying out on September 1st. I will post an update when we get out of the bush.

Springfield Armory Waypoint 2020 Pre Review.

One of my hunting partners, who is new to hunting, bought a 6.5CM Waypoint. I have been to our range with him all spring and summer prepping for an Alaska trip on 9/1/22. I am impressed at how accurate the gun is despite his relative newness to shooting. Prone, sitting with gun on sticks...

    Fishing during caribou hunts

Dolly Llama flies are great for char and dolly varden. Black and white combos. Black gnats for grayling. If you need a fly shop to put together a selection, call Alaska Fly Fishing Goods in Juneau. They are very helpful and tell them you are going to the Brooks Range for grayling and char and...

Wolf possibilities while hunting the Haul road for Caribou

I have only hunted Alaska once, but on my first day I had three wolves within 100 yards. Had a tag, but the problem was I had just been bluff charged by a young grizzly who was about 40 yards from me and following me as I retreated. The wolves kept following the grizzly. Wish the circumstances...

Hold on to your GMU 23/26A Shorts boys

Three of us are flying out of Kotz with RAM on September 1 -7, 2022. And FYI - Optics Planet had a bunch of Nosler Trophy Grade ammo this week that two of us shoot. Not sure if it is still in stock but I got four boxes for my Sako which has been hard to find in 30-06 180 grain partitions.

Hold on to your GMU 23/26A Shorts boys

RAM told us we will be fine. They will just have to work out logistics and take us further in from Kotz. Bryan is responsive and helpful. Our group is not nervous about our plans being disrupted.

    Gear recommendations for early September

Fenwick makes a couple of decent pack spinning rods. One model comes with two tip sections, both medium light and medium weight lures. Both models we bought were just fine and came with hard cases. I believe they were each around $100 so not a spendy outlay of money if they got broken or lost.

Weight Cut From Beginning of 2021 Season.

Changing from an Eberlestock pack with scabbard and main frame to a Kuiu 3600 saved me 5+ lbs. Also will never carry my camera equipment again in Alaska = 3+lbs cut off my fly in weight. I can replace it with extra food which I need and maybe a bottle of Irish whiskey!
