Another sako vote - even if it is a used rifle off of here or gunbroker.
Building one is fun, because you get exactly what you want. It can be done for well under $4k pretty easy with optics and shopping around.
Yes - I am very lucky and have great neighbors. I have around 800 acres I can hunt out my back door for whitetail, turkeys, and coyotes. My favorite is the ability to hunt after work, that way I save my PTO for western trips.
I haven’t attempted to fill my fall tag yet, but this would be a great excuse to get out there! I have ~50 roosting daily on my property, so wouldn’t take long.
Do you get picks after dark of them moving through to feed (they just don’t make it to you before dark)? If not they are just taking a different route to feed every night and you need to figure out where that is.
By now everything is messed up anyways - doe will be bedding in weird places...
22 creed yes, but it would need to me a slow twist.
Personally I wouldn’t build a new gun $$$ and bank on finding an accurate load at 4k+. I would plan on 38-3900 out of a 24/26” barrel.
I haven’t noticed a difference in performance on the BTs vs vmax. Haven’t done necropsy, just field observations. I was hoping the solid base would help on quartering shots, but still doesn’t compare to the 55gr sierras.
Picked up my barreled action this week - Bighorn origin and a 20ish” proof 1:8 barrel.
Shot 25 rounds through it to zero just now.
AVG 3104 fps 52fps spread with factory ammo - 80gr ELDMs.
Will be impatiently waiting for Rokstocks to be available again.
Compared to Wyoming/Montana you will be disappointed. Not a ton of public land and it gets pounded by every other type of hunter, including coyote hunters.
If you can get permission on continuous pieces of land you will have a much better hunt.
It is more stable than you think, just have to use the terrain/thermals/prevailing wind to your advantage. Most of the areas I hunt have a west prevailing wind - on north/south ridges it’s almost guaranteed to be pushing up on one side and down on the other (N vs S) Certain spots...
No - you can order a stainless that will weigh the same as a 20” carbon if you get the right contour. Save some money and have the same performance.
The last barrel I ordered was carbon, simply because it was in stock and I didn’t want to wait months for a stainless.
Should be similar to other varmint bullets which gives you the same results in certain circumstances. Will knock them down but they have tiny vitals, so poor shots will give you runners - they are also tiny targets.
Most shots on coyotes that have been called in are quartering to or away not...
This bullet is great especially on quartering too shots when you need more penetration.
I have the same POI for these 50gr vmax and 55 nosler BT. The sierra is my favorite and I haven’t noticed a difference is nosler vs vmax.
Yes and No - if they are educated to standard distress like rabbit - doing the same thing with a hand call produces the same results.
If they don’t respond you just have to keep trying until you figure out what works.
If you have a good ecaller and can load new sounds there isn’t a huge...
Should be pretty solid in lower positions - I’ve used much lighter ones. I got the heavier one without center column for shooting standing up (hunting coyotes at night).
