This right here is why when the thread about "Archery Terms you Hate" popped up my contribution was "The Ashby Studies".......... You would think deer and elk are armor clad dinosaurs based on the assessment these guys give. Not that everything they say is wrong per se, but they are way too...
Another point I think western hunters really need to pay attention to is how much harder it is to make a shot of any distance with poor footing, steep uphill or downhill etc. Shooting in a flat picturesque field with perfect footing doesn't really tell you how well you can shoot in mountain...
I went 3/5 at 80 yards with field points. My kill zone is biggish though (12x8 inch) . Next year I think I will try fixed blades at the same distance with a slightly smaller vitals probably 8x8.
Yeah that's how I think about it too.
Well, I know for one thing my MER for sure isn't 80 like I am testing out on this challenge. I am going to redo it at 70 and see what I think once day 5 is over. I will do it with broadheads as well.
I think this question really is what finally convinced me to participate. I had never really done anything scientific, if you will, to decide how far I should shoot at game. I had always said 50-70 depending on conditions.
I hear ya there. My first shot I didn't really take the time to focus on the shot and missed my kill zone. I like the cold bow challenge. First time doing it. I really like that when I draw that bow back I am laser focused like I would be hunting rather than just putting in reps.
This is my first cold bow challenge. My stated max effective range is 80 yards (yep trying to challenge myself here). I am shooting field points and my kill zone area is the red vitals on the deer target. The vitals measure 12 inches at the widest point ( measured on diagonal, I couldn't think...
My opinion is if you have even 5 lbs to lose off your ass or mid section, then focus there first..... if you are already as fit as could be, then maybe its worth worrying bout a few ounces.
Accessories usually are where I find most of my annoying buzzes on my equipment. Archers have a tendency to hyper focus on things that honestly don't matter that much. If all your screws on your sight, quiver, rest etc are snug I would just shoot it and have fun.
I have a V3X 33 and a couple year old RX4 Ultra Hoyt carbon bow (not a Ventum but its a Hoyt). They both are nice. The grip, for me, is superior on the Hoyt. The Mathews is quieter and less felt vibe. The Mathews seems more finicky with right and left misses (seems more torque sensitive). Both...
Worst case scenario buy and old cheapo off the adds if you can’t get parts for this season. I would hunt with pre 2000 bow before I would miss archery season.
