Ruger American Predator vs. the Savage Axis vs. the Mossberg Patriot

So true. Now, after reading all of this, I agree with pretty much everyone who has an Axis II. Yup, it's inexpensive, but it shoots. Now, full disclosure, while I am looking at another Axis .308, I am also looking at buying a 300 Win Mag in Tikka and customizing it with a new fiberglass...

Ruger American Predator vs. the Savage Axis vs. the Mossberg Patriot

For a "budget rifle" I'm a huge fan of the Axis II. I have a buddy that has an original Ruger American in .308, trigger was spongy, but I hear they've upgraded. Haven't fired a newer one to compare. Another buddy has a Mossy Patriot in 30-06, he's thinking of selling it. The best it shoots is 2...

Have you ever got into an argument elk hunting?

Have two brush ups over the years. My biggest was this past September on my first elk hunt. But I'll get to that in a second. 1. During late season gun deer hunting my dad and I went down to a private piece of property we had permission to hunt. Dad and I got there around 1pm to make sure we...

    Sub-$400 FFP Scope?

Thanks everyone. This gives me a bunch of options to send to my buddy.

    Sub-$400 FFP Scope?

What's up guys. I'm trying to help a buddy get a scope for his new .308 hunting rifle. He wants a First Focal Plane scope and his budget is $400. He'd like a FFP in 4-16x with hash marks for hold overs. Ideally he'd like a zero stop and if he can't get a zero stop then capped turrets so they...

    Top 5 Hunting Gear Ranking

When I think back, to my entrance into hunting, I have to say it was a gradual. I didn't jump straight out west. I started out as early teenage kid who went squirrel hunting and deer hunting with my dad and grandfather. In the Midwest. I mowed lawn for my neighbor for an entire summer for my...

Sighting in new scope - need help!

First thing I do is mount the scope correctly. I use a torque Fat Wrench, lap the rings, check the rings to ensure they're lined up and then mount the scope to the correct torque specs. Then at the range I'll put a target down at 100 yds and then lock the gun down so it can't move. Then take...

    Vortex vs Leopold rangefinder

While I don't have any experience with the bow rangefinders, I looked at rangefinders extensively before picking my Leopold. I chose the RX-1200 with illuminated retical. I compared it to the Vortex Razor. (And others at cabelas). One thing that I noticed about Vortex. I was ranging a mount...

    NL Pure dislikes

Love my 10x42 NLs, best glass hands down, not even a comparison. This past year on my Motana elk hunt, my dad had 10x42 Vortex Razors and my buddy had 10x50 Vortex Razors UHDs, the NL was exceptional. I spent a morning with my dad's 10x42s Vortex and I couldn't stand it anymore and went back...

Must have equipment for Montana Mule deer hunt

I did my first trip out west to do a pack hunt out of wall tents in Montanas back country. I'm an IL deer hunter who sits in a stand, so I know exactly what your thinking. Me, my dad, my cousin and brother all went with 10x42s and my buddy went with 10x50s. We had two 10x42 Swaro NL Pures (me...

    Tripod for 85mm Optics?

Slick 634 or 624 with a Suriu VA-5 is all you'll really ever need. Didn't you get a Vortex Pro GT tripod with it? Those are decent, a little heavy but stable. If you want to go expensive, Gitzo or an Outdoorsman. I have a Slick 634 and a Suriu VA-5 for my Sawro ATX 85mm, like it a lot.

    Good, inexpensive bag?

Thanks for all the recommendations guys, I went with a Teton -25° bag. Not breaking the bank, horses can carry it in, hood/draw string, rectangular, all the things I was looking for. I really looked into the Wigggys Super Lite hunter, that was a close 2nd. Thanks for all the help.

    Good, inexpensive bag?

I really like the looks of the Cabelas Instinct bag. The Wiggys are a bit out of my budget. Any other rectangular, 0° bags with a hood? Anyone use Teton bags?

    Good, inexpensive bag?

That's the one I was looking for , but they're out of stock and none in any stores. I was at my local Cabelas this past weekend and every store was out of stock.

    Good, inexpensive bag?

Kinda hoping I can find a rectangular bag with a hood. The Instinct looks like a mummy bag too?

    Good, inexpensive bag?

Yes, the pad is coming with me. The guide says he has pads, but it's a horse pack hunt so I can take a little extra gear for comfort.

    Good, inexpensive bag?

Hey guys, I've been digging around on the Sleeping System Forum for the past 3 days trying to decide on what sleeping bag I should get. I feel more confused than when I started. I'm doing my first elk hunt in Montana this September. We're going in on horses, with a guide, wall tents, cots...

    Cheaper bags and pads?

Following. I'm also interested in a "truck/trailhead" sleeping bag. I don't want a mummy bag because I sleep on my stomach and they're too constricting. I'm heading to Montana in a month for my forst pack hunt in a month and I need a bag. Going to be in wall tents and cots. But eventually...
