Have you ever slept in that bag below 15 degrees? The EN ratings mean, "He was still alive in the morning", not the "comfort level". I would suggest maybe a bag liner or an extra blanket, unless you want to sleep in your damp (with perspiration) clothes.
Also, plan for keeping water thawed...
I have lived in CO since 1962. The shocking thing is how quickly the population of this hellhole shifted hard left. I believe they will put bowbunting on the ballot within the next couple elections cycles, funded with California money, of course. The former president if Fund For Animals tole...
All but 6 of mine have been bowkills, but those 6 were killed with a (now) 40 year old Parker Hale .270. My wife is the rifle hunter in the family and shoots a Tikka .308. I guess we're old fashioned, but we eat a LOT of elk.
One bit of guidance - I have guided and hunted private ranches and public land. 49 years worth of a mix of both, lodges, horse packing, all of the above. If you go on a private ranch guided hunt you may learn a hell of a lot about how to hunt unpressured private ranch elk. But that is a...
There is a camp of 7-8 Midwestern guys that take over a section of mountain where I hunt in WY.. they stagger PPs so one draws every year, and the others wander around in the woods, calling and glassing, camping and eating and imbibing. True team effort, I guess.
Don't forget that average also includes outfitted hunters on ranches, where the success rate can be 100%, or close to it. On the big ranch where I guided and the bigger ranch next to it, the success rate was about 80% every year, including archery and muzzlelloader, and we/they ran a lot of...
Some local friends told me they believe problem bears from the Jackson area are relocated along that part of the range. I never saw any, but other guys hunting near me saw a couple. Not enough to cause any concern.
I have not hunted with or guided with that specific combo, but it will work just fine. Don't overthink it. Know your weapon and where it shoots and go kill your elk
I was out there the whole month and found no difference with the moon phases. I drove around in the night, bugling up into known elk haunts, and only occasionally got a single answer, but they were always silent or long gone by daybreak. Once in awhile a bull would bugle in the night on the...
Brad, I hunted two different WY general units this year, moved camp four times, hunted from 8200-10,400 and the "bow" hunting pressure from WY residents was unbelievable, and friends who hunted other generalnunits had the same story - tons of hunters, quiet elk. Guys were camping in wide spots...
I hunt an area where elk have adapted to hunters, ATVs, motorcycles, and people in general. They sometimes bugle at night, move around a lot from tracks on the road, but pretty much live in silence.
Lots of green feed and water in that timber- everything elk need.
I called in 7 the first...
I've called in bulls from 10K down to 8200' in the past week. Habitat and pressure are the critical factors. Not much talking where I am, some, but bulls coming in and some early am answers to locates. When you get here it should be great from the moon perspective. Don't worry about...
New unit or old familiar unit, I always drive all around on opening morning to see where everyone else parks, and figure out strategies based in the directions of the pressure. Public land hunting is as much about finding and patterning hunters as it is about finding elk. I also figure...
In Colorado it is basically up to the local DWM, and they sometimes have a list of hunters for the ranchers. That would be your best bet in CO. Most likely going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500, plus the tag price.
Umm, not many significant purchases have been made of public land for hunting access, and many of those are from RMEF. The BLM is required by law to sell, trade, or dispose of nonessential blocs. My elk hunting area where I hunted for decades was traded by the BLM to a big ranch. So was my #2...
I guided during that time of year and have cowcalled bulls in, but not bugling. But a couple years ago my wife shot a cow at the end of October after a big snowstorm, and bulls were bugling all around us, going nuts the whole morning. So many variables.
Only thing I would add to all of the rhe suggestions above (take your pick) is a Zodi instant hot shower and a Buddy heater, with a basket of refillable 1 lb propane canisters. The Zodi showers are wonderful compared to heating water in a bucket or plastic sack.
The other suggestion would be...
