The Sierra 55gn gameking have been sold in Australia for years branded as "Super Roo" bullets. They are great killers on roos, and wild dogs over here. That would be my first choice.
Just for reference on calibres re blood trails. Last year my son was hunting sambar deer in northern Victoria (Australia) with his new 458 Win mag. We developed a load for his rifle using the 300 grain Barnes TTSX BT bullets made for the 458 SOCOM. In the 458 socom, this bullet would have a...
Actually 250 is way too far of a benchmark. I want to see a pre season shooting test implemented, and if you pass the test, then you shouldn't be allowed to hunt. Just because I choose to stay home and chug beer all year, why should some guy who practices have an advantage over me?
I am just above sea level in Australia and have no issue shooting 80gn bullets in a 223 Rem with a 1/8" battel. We have shot the 80gn ELD-M and the 80.5gn Berger very accurately. I cant comment on anything heavier because we havent shot them.
Guys, apologies for the necropost but I wanted to see if we could revisit the topic of A Tip terminal performance.
Probably like many here, I was pretty excited to see the release of the A Tip. But early reporting on terminal performance from multiple people indicated a lot of inconstancy in...
In 1997, I hunted the very large wild hogs we get up in remote parts of northern Australia. I shot a very large boar on a water hole at approximately 50 meters. I used my 300 Win Mag loaded with the original Barnes X 180gn bullet. At the shot, the boar dropped on the spot. I reloaded and kept...
I think with the 338s, it depends on case capacity. For something in the 338 Lap / 338 Edge cartridges, the 250gn Berger Elite hunter is a good option. For the bigger capacity cases, the 300gn Berger Elite hunter or 285gn ELD-M are good options.
In the 270, I have loaded up the 150gn Accubond...
The only ELD-X that I have seen in action was used by my son on a hunt in 2022. He was 17 at the time, on a youth hunt for fallow deer (similar size to whitetail deer) in South Australia. I loaded the 178gn ELD-X in his 308 Win. I was planning to use some of the 168gn A-Max bullets as we have a...
This one is another of my hunter blades. I have been getting some really good feedback on this design. I have one with a hunter who has caped out and broken down 3 sambar stags with it in the last two weeks. He reports that he is getting through the whole animal no problem without a resharpen...
This is one I made a while ago. It has a few flaws, so I put it aside for a while trying to decide what to do with it. I was thinking about grinding the handle off an redoing the bevels. But I decided the wood I used for the handle is too nice to destroy. So I finished it off over the last week...
Yes. Looking for one now. I assume MIL too?
The biggest issue aside from the drop test reliability is finding a FFP reticle that works well at low magnification. The THLR ret has that as close to perfection as I have seen the way it gives you a German no 4 at minimum zoom.
Firstly, congrats that your wife knows/cares enough about your interests to buy you something that supports your hobby / life style (y)
As a knife user and knife maker, I dont like the idea of a sharpened section of spine on a hunting knife. The maker has clearly tried to compartmentalise a...
No, with a Tikka T3. I think the MDT magazines were the problem. This was during Covid in 2020 and it was pretty much impossible to get any other magazines in Australia at the time.
When feeding 6GT from MDT 10 round 308 magazines, I had constant nose diving issues irrespective of how many rounds were in the magazine. I redneck modded a spacer at the back of the mag like a Dasher conversion and it would feed much better. But in the end I gave up as I didnt feel like it was...
Thanks mate. They turned out really well. I dont actually do my own leather work, but the guy who does them for me does really good work. He took my concept and executed it spot on.
Another version of my hunter blade. Nitro V steel with a tapered tang and full flat grind. Handle is black and blue G10 laminate and stainless Corby bolts, with a kydex sheath.
The fit is really good. Its a friction fit with about 3/4 of the knife in the sheath. I agree leather looks a lot better than kydex. I generally always put wood handled knives in leather, but it also depends on what people want. Kydex is practical and light, but leather looks better to me.
