2 deer shot last evening. Central shoulder shot and high shoulder shot. Both pretty much dropped on the spot. 77TMK MV 2900, 230 yards. Low shoulder pass through, no blood. Hi shoulder bullet in wound on far side. Central shot first 2pics, then high shot.
It's pretty good performance for a 52 grain bullet to go right through this deer and make a good exit wound (pic shows the width it penetrated). As said they are Berger jackets and the guy who makes them here seems to have got the core mixture pretty right. Im not advocating little bullets but...
While the 77TMK and a few other 73-80 grn are top drawer for the .223 and deer a closed mind means you are missing the experience of gaining experience. And doing interesting stuff. I accept though that limited deer seasons constrain this and most need every shot to count. Not so much me. I use...
It's 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 a hunt. I hunt at a minimum once a fortnight all year round. 75% with the .223. Different countries do things differently. It all goes to a soup kitchen/charity.
I tried them. Tricky to get to shoot. Behave very similar to the 64 Nosler BSB. Reliable pass throughs but don't expect reliable blood trails. Slower killing than the 69 grn TMK. The 69 TMK is far superior.
In my experience (and I have plenty - 75 years old and still shooting 70 deer a year) there isn't a .224 bullet that will reliably exit and leave a blood trail. There are just too many variables. The same can be said for larger calibers too although for me the best has been Nosler BT's - but...
2nd deer as above re 64grn BSB. 290 yards. Full penetration shoulder shot. Ran 80 yards steep down hill and ended up in terrible place so no autopsy pics, But again, good enough performance. No blood trail at all and wouldn't have found him without my dog. Bullet entry marked on pic with dog.
Here you go. 64 grn BSB. Shot at 200 yards down hill. Quartering towards me and hit in front of chest. Ran about 60 yards. My dog found it and I dont recall any blood trail. Good angled penetration and exit through the lungs and paunch. The exit was narrow but I was quite satisfied with the...
3 deer shot with 77 TMK last evening. 200, 230 and 250 yds. Tikka .223 and 2900 mv.
!st hit a little far back but exit angled through back of crease. It bolted 80 yards. Bullet was just under skin on opposite side.
2nd was tight behind shoulder. Did the .223 stagger and dropped within 5 yards...
77grn Sierra Tipped. Low shoulder shot at 188 yds. Just took a few steps. Projectile just under skin on off side. This is the first one of many that I have found that was completely intact. No external blood at all - all of the damage was inside.
