The ranch and BLM that I hunt each fall have good numbers and buck size seems to be increasing. I haven't seen/heard about EHD around the area. I've not had a deer test positive for CWD yet either. Given the number of animals we take in the area each year, I'd say we have a decent sample...
If its just the heat factor you want, Sitka Duck Oven. Not puffy in the sense you can pack it down, but its definitely something to wear in the ice hut.
Just like the old-timers...
I Took my Hawken .50 caliber to Idaho looking for an experience from the 1850s. Several stalks later I found out why Lewis and Clark took 20 times as many deer as pronghorn. Getting close is not easy on the open sage sea.
Day one produced many stalks but I wasn't...
Each state is different but the process always includes you apprenticing under a sponsor. The rest is generally:
1. Get Sponsored (a feat in itself).
2. Take the state wildlife agency test (very rigorous).
3. Build mews and get inspected (my game warden had never done it before, so I had...
I seriously considered a goshawk. They are versatile but also come with an attitude. I have future plans that a GH would not be conducive to, so I went with the Peregrine. I also looked at a HH, my sponsor flies those, but the quarry is small game and I am wanting to fly on waterfowl and...
It is very much a lifesyle. I travel with my falcon, bringing her food and accoutrement with me. This makes for fun conversations at rest stops, hotels, and other otherwise "normal" places. I weigh her twice daily, and train her frequently. During the season we will hunt at least every...
I'd been interested in birds since I was a kid. I knew of falconry via other books. But what really sealed it I think was trapping Golden Eagles for lead blood testing. It's took a very long time to get to having my first raptor.
As for getting started the best thing is to find a falconer...
My journey with my red-tailed hawk Grinnell ended this past spring (I released her fat and full-feathered). This new bird I purchased and will be training up. Hopefully by October we are on our first birds. Falcons and Hawks are very different and I am finding that to be true on many levels...
I'm there. Smoke is bad. If you aren't used to it you will definitely feel it in the lungs and eyes. If you are used to it, you'll still feel it in your lungs and eyes. There was another fire that popped up on the east side of the Big Hole this past week, IDK its current status. The rain we...
It may be tricky for your first time, but you can find does that have 4" or so horns. That would be a cool euro for first time out. Check your regs on what you can shoot, and how they identify does on your license.
I'm late to the Convo, but I spent a week in Centralia, rained all but 4 hours. I had my Sitka Cloudburst jacket and pants, added in gaiters. Zero complaints. Three years later, still using the gear with no issues.
I would tell you to think about upsizing so you can layer under.
I'd encourage you to read about some history of the park before you go, it will make it more meaningful. Crowds will also began to thin out by the time hunting season arrives.
For outdoorsmen:
1. MT Washburn: you'll seek mountain goats and sheep.
2. Sheepeaters/Tukudika Sheeptraps. These...
If you do the Red Breast, look for Cask Strength. The flavor is more full, noticeably. The alcohol content is higher, so drink slower, which helps you to really get the flavor. The Lustau edition is also good, but is sweeter and it lingers after you swallow. I put it at the bottom of my RB...
