    Ground blinds

I never had any issue with deer spooking either. I was somewhat impressed at how close they would get to them. I had many times a deer would walk right around it. I usually had them out some time before hunting out of them. But never had any deer spook even if I put it out the day before using it.

    Ground blinds

After spending big bucks on a few cloth type blinds the last ones I bought were cheaper on sale cloth blinds. Things happen in the woods and I look at these blinds as Short term. My more expensive blinds got ripped up in about the same time as my cheaper models. I mostly hunt out if climbers...

    Helene destroyed my hunting season

I hunted in Wayne National Forest in Ohio for decades. One year they had a heck of an ice storm. Busted up the trees in the big timber really bad. Not unlike what a hurricane does to a woods in Florida. It took 15 for that woods to get back to normal. With the canopy destroyed the understory...

    Power banks

I have four Ankers. Had most for 5 years or better. No issues. I have a 6800(?)two 10ks, a 22k. Doing it again I would buy two 10ks and call it good. The 22k is pretty heavy. 6800 is light and nice for a day hunt. The 10k are not that much heavier and get the most use.

    Holiday prices

Your money but when I want something I find the best price and buy it. It might be too much mental torture for me waiting a small amount of money. I would buy it , scope it up get some use out of it. Spend the time making money I would have otherwise spent looking for more of a discount.

Strategy for Other Hunters in "Your" Spot

I didnt read all the replies but its public land. Your spot isnt really your spot. This is even an issue on private leases. Anytime your sharing a property your spot is tough to preserve. On our private lease we try to get guys to respect a spot if they see a guy has been working it and has his...

    Post hunt etiquette: Splitting/sharing meat

One place I hunt every year has a butchering party. Guys that don't even hunt show up to help cut up deer. These guys are all lifelong buddies and are getting together to have a bit of beer some good eats and just hang out. I alway offer the guys who are there without a deer some meat. They...

    Post hunt etiquette: Splitting/sharing meat

If splitting the meat is expected then it is determined before the hunt how that will be done. Not after. If the deal is all meat is split equally then even if four guys get two handfuls of meat then thats what they all get. Not about enough to go around. Whatever it is it is. If there is no...

    Big game wound/recovery ratio

Most deer wounded and not recovered on our lease are from a few of our guys that bow hunt. I’m not against bow hunting just I notice as a percentage there are more not recovered in bow season. At least that the guys are admitting to.

    Big game wound/recovery ratio

I have been hunting deer and hogs in areas with long seasons and liberal bag limits since 1986. I have shot well over 120 deer and several hundred hogs. I can recall losing only three deer and two hogs that I could positively identify as wounded that I failed to recover. My hunting has been...

    Burn out

One of my retired friends told me he is so busy that he doesn't know how he had time to have a job.

Took a doe from a group of 8

Where I hunt I can shoot a groups of doe and they might come back in an hour. But if they actually see me they might not come back through for 3-5 days.

    Climber

I can see how that might be a problem. I hunt in pine timber land in AL and fortunately every tree is the same kind, age and size. And they are ten feet apart. You can pretty much find a tree that gives you the position you want. I keep a couple ladder stands around if I decide to hunt...

Best budget processing setup for white in a home kitchen

When I lived and hunted in SC for ten years I hung deer in a cool place if it was under 50 degrees. Early season I skinned and quarter deer as soon as the field dressed deer cooled down. I put it on top of ice in a large cooler until I got to processing it which was up to a week sometimes. Some...

Best budget processing setup for white in a home kitchen

Get that kitchen-aid attachment out of your head. I used one at a friend’s house years ago and frankly I would pay a processor before I did that that again.

Best budget processing setup for white in a home kitchen

Do not cheap out on your grinder. Your grinder is the backbone of your processing if your doing more than steaks and roasts. You can use it for more than game. I make pork sausage. Buy once , cry once. With a good grinder you can really build a good home processing plant. I have a LEM #22 big...

Don’t be stupid like me. Knives are sharp.

This is where I’m at with my type of hunting. No real reason for me to use a scalpel style knife. I bought and played with a few but went back to a drop point folder in my pack for walk in hunts and fixed boning knives if I’m cutting up deer at a camp. Not the most lightweight option but I more...

    Life after stents?

I hear you on the mental side of things. When I got out of the hospital for the first time in my life I felt like I couldn't take care of myself or handle any situation that came my way. I had crazy thoughts like what happens if I get mugged. I never was a tough guy type but I never felt...

    SXS gun transport

Since I had two of the older model Kolpin gun boots I bought a holder for my new Ranger 1000 xp (2024) that would use those. No issues with those in 15-20 years of use. I used it on someones rifle years ago had 54 objective. Been lots of 50s carried with it. Not sure on the turret issue. I sure...

    Vacuum sealing burger bags

I started using the bags after decades of using vac pak bags. I use the tape sealer. I have kept burger for years. Once froze you have to be careful tossing them around as they are thinner than vac bags. I have never had any spoilage but I am careful to get all the air out of the bag. I have no...
