I carry one of those mini key chain ones. It's basically a set of tiny pliers, fold out scissors and a knife. I use pliers to change Havalon, scissors for opening freeze dried, cutting Tenacious Tape, etc. Probably weighs an ounce.

Can you camp on the New Mexico side and go in through Sugarite St Park? If so, that's the route I would take. I know guys that hunt the NM side regularly. Every now and then a decent 5 or 6 yr old is killed.
