Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

100%. Arizona and Wyoming are totally different. In AZ this year we had record snowfall, I believe this was the snowiest year on record. We’ve had something like 159” of snow this snow season (not annual). Google “snowiest cities in the U.S.” and Flagstaff Arizona comes up in the top 10. Not...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

The conversation and well-being of the herd and horn hunting are not mutually exclusive When shed hunting starts to come at the expense of the species, we should totally look at it. Much of the time it does not and 99% of the shed hunters I know are elk hunters that love elk more than they love...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

Yes agreed. And vice versa. Things are certainly different across the west and probably should have different regulations to manage the differences and nuances

I don’t think anyone has attempted to refute this? I certainly haven’t

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

Seeing a human doesn’t kill an elk. Again, regional differences matter? The number of elk killed by stress from shed hunters in AZ I’d be willing to bet is zero. So the sale of sheds should be banned? Should people be allowed to hike in elk country? Should we not allow predator hunting or spring...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

It’s much much more than that for almost everyone. Everyone I know who does it with any success and spends much time at it all hunt elk, love elk, are well invested in the conservation of the species

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

Again, some guys saying “hey Huntinaz what you do looks pretty okay but some guys in my state impact the herd. So ultimately it should all be banned” Well, I understand that’s no skin off your asses, but it’s skin off mine. And hey I agree, if there are actual animal deaths resulting from shed...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

To my knowledge, the bulk of the end market is China where they make tea and crap out of it and supposedly it gives them better hardons and they use it for a whole bunch of other holistic witchcraft Lately there is competition from the US market as dog chews The government makes money on...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

A big shed is 9lbs. The ones pictured in the original thread average about 9lbs each. The average 5+ point elk antler weights 4-7lbs. A 300” bull is about where you start hitting 7lbs. A rag 5 point 3-4lbs Prices last couple years are more like $14-17/lb for browns It’s far less lucrative...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

Interesting discussion, was wondering if all the opinions were already stated on the other thread. Nope 😆 A lot of this seems very narrow-minded to me. Public land is not just for hunters. Shed hunters and hikers and campers and wood-cutters have just a much right to be out there as anyone else...

Shed Hunting: Where’s the beef and what’s the best way to manage it?

Starting a new thread to minimize the derailment of another It seems there are strong opinions about shed hunting which I admit is curious to me as an Arizonan. The request for information on antler buyers around Denver sparked a debate and maybe we can discuss it here It seems there is...

    Denver area antler buyers?

So, it’s okay to invade habitat on foot if we are trying to kill them, but not otherwise? Is scouting ok? What about hiking?

    Denver area antler buyers?

So, you have a problem with the public taking a legal public resource and exercising freedom with what they do with said resource, if one of those ways is selling to a market where there is demand, and you think the government should either ban this practice or should be entitled to a higher cut...

    Wild Game Recipes

Can’t remember if I’ve posted lengua tacos before, but I see we have some adventurous eaters here. May have to try that heart ceviche sometime, looks good. When feasible I like to save elk and deer tongues and make lengua tacos. My kids love them I pressure cook the tongues in an Instant Pot...

    Anybody Shed Hunting?

Found a few this year so far, about 45 miles hiked I’d say. Hope to get back out next week, it’s been tough to get into where I want to go due to snow and road closures but not bad so far considering

.308 bullet choice for elk. Currently running 165 accubonds

They’re both good options for elk but the TTSX is the better elk bullet in my experience. As far as margin of error, Barnes has the advantage. If you have an angle that requires more penetration the TTSX is going to be the one that gets there more reliably
