    Rangefinders for hunting and golf

I used one of the Leica Pinmasters for years until I moved up to something with ballistic capability. I bet the newer ones have even more capability. Worked good - told me how far stuff was...

    Would you rather...

If you are just trying to find animals - I'd do the binos and a tripod. Try and get the very best you can, maybe even a 12x. Stretch that budget a bit. If you are looking for a certain class of animal - a spotter is the way to go. I'm afraid though, a 1K budget won't get you what you need to...

    Which 308 bullet?

I'm gonna ruin your day - shoot 10 shot groups. I bet your results will change and it'll be more representative of true accuracy. As far as 'killin' goes, cup and core have been piling up animals for a long time. All but the most dangerous game is pretty easy to kill with a properly placed...

    .30-'06 and .308.

Short answer - yes it's overlap, but do what you want. I'll never advise against buying another rifle. The 308 is a great caliber.

    Tikka 6.5x55 Swede

Most factory offerings are pretty tame due to the surplus market of rifles. If you reload you are in for a treat. I have a few M38 surplus rifles and a Tikka. The magazine on the Tikka works great for using the longer bullets as it is 30-06 length.

    .30-06 effective range

I'll be the odd-ball on bullet weight (and other things). I run light in my 30-06 - 155 Berger Heavy in my 308 - 175 or 180 Berger. The 30-06 will do more than you think it will, just practice as much as possible and set some limits.

CANT do this, CANT do that!

Does your scope have a zero stop? Enough elevation in the base and rings can act as one. I’m not suggesting go hard stop against the bottom of your adjustment, but if you are less that a full turn back from your zero you are not lost in the dial. Forget all the above if you have one.

Practice advice for extending hunting range

Yeah, it bothers me the magneto shots are for velocity only. But, I may be guilty of shooting a few traditional chronographs trying to double duty my shots...

Entry level long range hunter questions

Same as above. Ditch the sled, ditch the bore snake. Every new rifle I bring home gets taken apart, inspected and torqued back together. I also clean the snot out of it before firing. You should do the same. Be sure of your scope mounts. It should all be loctited and marked. Shoot groups at...

Practice advice for extending hunting range

Here's what I'd do: Upgrade the scope - SWFA would be the budget option if you can find one. Otherwise, look for something with mildots/hashes. Just be aware if it is FFP or SFP. If it is the latter you will most likely have to be on max power for it to work. Add a bubble while you are at it...

Need help to "true" my chart...or should I bother?

Improper zero and three shot groups are the start of most problems. 10 shots @ 100 and center the group for zero. You will find out that most rifles aren’t the tack drivers advertised. That’s ok. The programs are great, but be sure to accurately input ALL the info. Best way to know your drops...

    Suggestions on a chonograph?

I use the magneto, it is very accurate and convenient. Before that it was one of the folding kind - prochrono? Anyway, it was erratic until I built a plywood box for it. It mounted inside and the box was painted black throughout with a fluorescent light diffuser on top.

Novice diving in head first needs advice

The canted base gives you more scope adjustment. I run a 100yard zero and everything is up from there. What is you current magazine box length? The 30-06 180 is listed at a COL of 3.3" The 280ai with 162 is listed at 3.325" Definitely talk with your builder about cartridge and bullet...

Novice diving in head first needs advice

Pick a bullet first. Stay in the case head range(.470) and find the slickest bullet you can. Use that long action to your advantage and make sure you have enough room to seat the bullet properly and cycle through the action (i.e. pick a short action cartridge). Get the twist right - you will...

Beginner Rifle Setup... Tikka T3x Lite Roughtech .300 WM w/ Nightforce 4-14x56

The long range stuff is a wind game - the only way to get good is to shoot and shoot a lot. Whether or not 300WM is comfortable for long sessions is up to you. Without reloading, I would find the cheapest ammo that get closest to MOA performance and shoot the heck out of it. Even if it is a...

"Tikka's just don't shoot good" - Gunwerks podcast

This is a golden time for factory rifles an LR shooting. I think back in the day, customs may have been the way to go if you wanted to get in the game, but now it is accessible for all. I love me some Tikka - I have four (.308 x2 , 30-06, 6.5x55). Bottom line, they are easy and reliable...
