6.5 creed now, plenty of ammo, very little recoil, shoot all you want. plenty for deer.
300 something mag later, with a brake and a limbsaver, recoil is very manageable.
and two guns are better than one!
did the OP ever do anything? threading for a brake and throwing on a limbsaver recoil pad will make a HUGE difference.
or prob can get most of your money back by selling what you have and buying one in 6.5 creed.
i had a 'smith thread my tikka 300wsm lite barrel for a 1/2x28 little bastard brake. that part went well.
first shot, the brake blew apart! not sure if the brake didn't have the proper internal diameter, or if he turned it down (skinnied it) too much to match the thin barrel profile. to his...
if you don't want a comb or other mods or designs, their base stock is just fine. depending on what caliber, adding a limbsaver pad may be a great idea. and certainly if you want to throw on a carbon prefit barrel, you'll want another stock with a bigger barrel channel. i wouldn't rush out to...
tikka is a pretty good call. nothing sexy but they shoot and have smooth actions. with the $8 trigger spring you get a VERY nice trigger. if you want to dress it up, you can spin on a prefit barrel and put it in a nicer stock. i have two and just ordered a third.
one is 6.5 creed and other is 300wsm. relatively low round counts on each, break in, sight in, get some dope, etc. i just like the combined ring and mount, less to align, come loose, etc. no issues but no heavy use.
i was going to call you out on that, but damn that looks accurate just based on hornady's ballistic tool, esp at elevation and if you handload i guess! energy is only 1100-1200 ft-lbs though.
way back when i was a kid, the rule of thumb was a "ton" of energy AT the elk. is there a newer rule...
for me, holding over is quicker and i'm staying on the target or animal thru the scope. can't say how much quicker but it is quicker, at least for me. as i get older i have a harder time reading the dial, esp if darker or in a blind etc, to that makes the holding even quicker v dialing...
i'll disagree with this. i almost always hold over in both PRS (1000+yd matches) and hunting and did so with my two elk a few years back at 200 and 400yds, not that those are really long distances. holding over is a lot quicker and you keep your focus thru the scope vs spinning and reading a...
an illuminated reticle will remove some of the downsides of ffp scopes at low magnification.
also as noted above, if you get a sfp that maxxes at something like 10x, chances are at any distance where you need to hold over, you'll be at max magnification where the reticle will be accurate.
if...
7 PRC should work in a Tikka Magnum Long Action (7rm or 300wm caliber, of course with something like a proof carbon prefit barrel in 7prc), right? That magazine should be 3.370 internally. Hornady is showing a COAL of 3.265 for their 175 ELDX. Case diameter of .532, identical to 300 WinMag...
just fyi the gun & caliber you want for hunting is prob the opposite of what you want for prs. prs is all (or at least mostly) about light-recoiling calibers in heavy guns so it's super easy to see your splash way out there. hunting, you want lighter rifles to carry around all day, and heavier...
a new blaster is always the right answer! yeah that 7prc looks super sexy, but it's brand new and untested. ammo is $100+ PER BOX on gunbroker now. but i'm considering a 7prc also...
how about 300 wsm. ballistics/energy etc are very close and way more prevalent and less expensive ammo.
