I would give a serious look at hanwag banks II, camofire has had them recently for under half off as they get ready to update the model. Get a wide
I have a pair I love and it's exactly what you describe you are looking for.

I have the flex thin in a pair of hanwags that my regular insoles took up a bit too much volume. They a very nice on support but won't wow you with comfort they are thin so don't expect a ton of plush cushion.
I don't have a ton of miles on the boot/insole combo so without a good 15mi day I...
Probably dependant on your feet, lots of guys love a stiff boot for support and protection. As a trail runner my feet and ankles hate that feeling of being locked down and I like a more flexible nimble boot.
I would have a back up boot of some kind to go along but if your feet don't want a...
I never knew/thought of that. Now I'm thinking I might need to try something else I hate losing waterproofing before the boot wears out

Don't over look doing a two zone lacing, I have a wide forefoot and narrow heel and keep the bottom half of my laces pretty lose and just snug up a little at the ankle

Campsaver has a lot of name brand boots on sale you might be able to find something reasonably priced that will last him a long time if his feet are done growing.

Man I can't walk 200yds in mucks, doesn't matter how I size them my heel just slides around too much.
For not overly rough terrain I like the miendl ultralight in 800gr, the grip isn't as nice as say a quality vibram sole but they are a very light comfortable leather boot. Used be sold by...
I'd give meindl a look their ultralight is very comfortable, I would think in those areas you won't want a very stiff shank. A boot good for side hilling isn't probably the most comfortable on stand all day and vise versa.

Not the tatra but I have the banks and think hanwag quality is fantastic with a great heel pocket, good roller laces, nice vibram sole. I did go with a wide which are only wider in the toe box.

I had the crag rats I liked them but did not love them, they were still better then the crispis I tried for my feet but ultimately felt like a kept finding reasons to reach for another boot so I got rid of them. Got a pair of hanwag banks and while I haven't started racking up many miles in them...
I don't think the zamberlans are going to be very soft flex wise but those are great prices. I do like leather lined boots in dry climates where treating the leather is enough to keep them dry. When broken in they will be more comfortable.

I must have tried all the wrong crispi models because I found the Dakota and valdres to be narrow and Dakota were crazy low volume and crushed the top of my toes and instep.
I don't measure wide but am wider then average enjoy/need some toe splay room and have a narrow heel so just buying a...
