OP, where are you hunting that 500-600 yds will be the self imposed limit? Have you been in the area you want to hunt (since it will your first time with an OTC tag) to know you will need to shoot at that range?
Much gets said about the long range shot, I was of that mindset 30 years ago when...
OP, glad to hear you have a gun coming. Thanks for the patience on the bullet tangents.
To clarify, I was not contending that monos are frangible bullets unless designed as such to lose petals that some are doing. From experience the TTSX opens up quickly, shreds and chunks the vital tissue...
Full circle on best bullet criteria from a century ago... heavy for caliber (SD to the crowd that may only know BC) to overcome frangible designs so there is enough bullet weight left at closer range to reach the vitals after rendering unedible a good amount of meat. Yet less explosive...
I did not say WE or YOU have to take him at his word. That's up to you if you think what he said is not the experience he is speaking from. I said I take him at his word and see no reason he would not tell it straight from his experience.
A 300 Win Mag certainly has recoil. Many years ago, in a land far, far away hunters could shoot good groups from the bench, having learned to look through the shot and focus on the target with a PAST recoil pad while verifying zero for hunting season. Then practice dry firing for trigger feel...
You use them all the time on game or on a target?
Like I said, I am very far from having a dog in this fight, but the discussion is always worth the read when folks come along.
Pictures or it didn't happen? I would take a guy at his word on what he saw as a guide, but I'm about as far from having a dog in this fight as could be, I shoot monos from a medium bore.
Thanks for finding that, and digging around.
Colorado could announce "at least one non-resident permit" allocated before the draw. But don't get excited if they did, that's as good as no information in most all scenarios. I am not sure there's a single unit in Colorado that does no...
Agree with Scoot. I don't live in Wyoming, but seems ranchers want a solution and they also want to eat their cake too. Complaining about a problem, and not wanting to be part of the best solution, which is to simply reduce the numbers by hunting, indicates not being solution based in mentality.
You said, "I'm not sure what your goal is when you shoot an animal, but my goal is to kill that animal as fast as possible". That falls in line with the definition of a humane kill, and implies what it says.
I appreciate your reference to the pages on this forum, what has been your experience...
You indicated "... past 400 yards", and it's easy to run numbers that show 25% to 50% to the good with expansion velocity above and beyond that with the factory load and cartridge class being discussed.
I'll ask again. Is it common (or necessary?) to shoot moose, or any big game in Alaska (or...
Interesting, "monos are asking for trouble" past 400 yards. Is it common (or necessary?) to shoot moose, or any big game in Alaska (or in 90%+ of hunting ANYWHERE) beyond 400 yards? Seriously.
It's asking for trouble with any bullet when expansion velocity is not achieved for the distance of...
Sorry to hear and condolences of the family members passing and you getting sick on the hunt. A nice congratulations on the successful hunt and the work you put in ahead of time getting the load dialed in.
Harvest reports are to give another bit of info to be the first to tell everyone about and give a group hard-on the next spring for where folks might apply for a tag and become another non-resident in a western state.
They don't issue tags until they've done the spring survey, which has been...
I like your point about if the shot isn't perfect, ancillary damage from the petals could hit the heart, damage lungs versus a mono that isn't placed where it was intended yet doesn't lose petals. I won't discount the opportunity to take advantage of margin for error that could be in my...
The honest question I have, when/if Hammers do penetrate as well as Barnes, does the bullet diameter shank do the job as well on hard angle shots as a larger diameter Barnes that does not shed its petals on initial expansion? I would say not in terms of damage. Wouldn't disagree on a broadside...
