Here's a Nevada 180 main frame buck. Another one that I misjudged. I thought he was around 26 inches and in the 170's. I had passed him up but found him again 4 days later. He was the best buck I found after a tough 3 week hunt. He was 28 inches wide and grosses 186.
Here's a big bodied Montana buck.
He scores 170 and is 26 inches wide. Just out to his ears ... LOL. Those 5 inch eye guards really help with the score.
One of the problems in this day and age is drawing a deer tag. I've elk hunted units that I thought I would draw in the future when I don't have a deer tag just to scout them out for deer. My concentration is always on big bucks.
Oh yeah. The quickest way to ruin a deer hunt is to kill a bull. Especially if you're down in some hole or two or three miles from the road. Even with horses, you're going to lose valuable time.
On the other hand, if you're deer hunting and run into elk hunters, ask them about the deer/bucks...
I saw one while elk hunting in the Gravelly Range in Montana back in the 70's. There was about 16 inches of snow and I was following a set of bull tracks up a hill when the wolverine came down on the same tracks. We came face to face at 25 feet. He jumped out of the elk trail and scurried off in...
I had really misjudged this one. I had him broadside at 50 feet and passed him up opening day. I thought he was only 26 inches and was hoping for something bigger. I found him again after 5 days of hunting and decided to take him. He turned out to be 29 5/8 wide and grosses 175 7/8.
Right beam...
We always go early and cut about a truck load. This will be enough for a cook tent and a sleep tent. The fire in the cook tent will be going if anyone is in camp. The sleep tent will have a fire at night before bed and if someone gets up to stoke it (think old men) during the night and in the...
I went with these on my 04 4runner. Just on the rear. The front upper control arms are too close to the tire to fit chains up front. You could get 1.25" spacers (Spidertrax) or the front but that may change the tire fitment in the wheel well. I also stayed away from the V bars...
I've done a bunch of these throughout the years mainly for friends who would not have done anything for their trophies. I cut out the plaques on a scroll saw and then router the edges, sand, stain, and then seal them with polyurethane.
Cut the skull plate to best display the antlers and then...
Just got back from the coast. I found these Tule elk out on Tomales Point. The fog was blowing around the whole time I was there. The bulls were hard horned and the rut appeared to be on.
One of the first things I'd try is the ECtuner. It maybe the cheapest out of your other options. Or get into reloading where you can explore seating depths.
I got this buck on the same hunt as the bull. One of the few times I filled both tags on my combo license. These are the clothes we hunted in back then. Before camo.
The least I would take on a mule deer hunt
Rifle: any scoped bolt action in 270 or better. Plenty of extra shells.
Boots: don't skimp here. A good pair of leather boots with merino wool socks.
Optics: any new manufactured binos in at least 7X35. 10X42 are my favorite.
Pack: any good day...
This was in Montana 1978. I tracked this lone bull for 4 1/2 hours and got a snap shot at him at 150 yards as he wheeled around and stepped back in the timber. The last sight picture I had at the recoil was a large fir tree. Shot him through the center of his heart and he dropped behind the fir...
