Man, It is almost better when it stays below freezing and the outside of your boots never get wet. If getting the outside of the boots wet is unavoidable, it sucks, but I have slept with my boots on my stomach, in a waterproof stuff sack, inside my sleeping bag.
As far as wetness inside your...
Once you get a pair, you will never go back to anything else. They are awesome. I probably put 500 ski days on my first pair, plus hunting, backpacking, snow shoveling, ect.
I shoot 2 or 3 whitetail deer per year. I am never more than 100 yards from the truck. It is not hunting, but they taste good.
I am elk hunting next week, so who knows how that will go, but last year I shot 2 cows one morning about 2.5 miles as the crow flies from the truck. It took 3 days...
Yeah, I agree that more than one glove is a good idea in some conditions. A pair of small midweight gloves that are touchscreen compatible stay in the thigh pocket of my pants. On days with cold mornings and warm afternoons, I switch gloves when my hands get too warm. On super cold days, I...
You cannot beat Hestra gloves, in my opinion. They are a bit pricey, but well worth it. I think your best bet is to buy gloves from a company that specializes in making gloves and they have made gloves longer than most of us have been alive. If you live in Colorado, they have a store in...
I wouldn't put down under that outer layer. The fanatic is like 3 pounds, right? You will not get good performance out of squished down. I would go with a less compressible synthetic. High loft fleece might fit the bill - I have used a Mountain Hardwear monkey man and a Patagonia r3 and was...
I've had plenty in the 3-4 year old range and it was fine. The only issue I have run into is vacuum bag failure = freezer burn. Plastic wrap and butcher paper works better for me.
I think it is more tender after its been in the freezer for about a year.
When it is cold outside and I am creating a ton of body heat by hiking, no amount of directional breathing is gonna keep my glasses clear, especially when I stop hiking and peek through my binos. Also, I have an unfortunate inability to sit for very long, so my hike-in never really stops most...
I wear my regular rx glasses most of the time, but in some conditions, they fog up, so I use contacts. Also, when it snows, sunglasses are a must, so I use contacts then as well. When day hunting or backpack hunting, I always have plenty of disposable contacts in my backpack. Getting fingers...
Elk backstrap seasoned with salt and pepper and seared in olive oil in a cast iron pan was my dinner tonight. The best part was my 4 year old looking at his plate and asking if it was deer or elk for dinner tonight.
We backpacked in for 5 days. We slept above 8,000 feet and hunted around 9,000 feet. It was cold. We didn't take a stove because of the fire ban. Our coldest morning was -15. We had a foot of snow. The two cold days were quiet up high - everyone (us included) avoided the hellish windchill...
Dude, I have no interest in arguing with a stranger on the internet. However, the warden in that unit is awesome and returns calls within 24 hours, even in the middle of the season. Manup and earn it by taking a couple of quick (and beautiful) pre-season drives and getting boots on the ground...
The drive can be anything from dry the whole way to roads closed for a day. What day of the week and what time of day would you be driving? Driving out of Denver Friday afternoon or driving back to Denver Sunday afternoon can add many hours to the drive, even on dry roads.
I connected on a follow up Texas heart shot on an elk that was running away from me. Missed the bullseye by like an inch. I agree - shoot till they stay down, but the Texas heart shot makes a mess. My first shot would have killed the elk, but the followup expedited it.
Haha. I just remembered a post you created months ago complaining about the draw system in Colorado. You only drew this deer tag. In one of your posts you wrote, "I'll guarantee you i put in more hours afield per month than you do per year. Im not some snowflake bitch." I guess you should...
