Wild guess would be around 2350. That’s just about 75% of what factory ammo is listed at while accounting for the 18” barrel. I know velocity:charge isn’t linear but I have nothing else to go on.
Bow type shots at 100 yds or less. It’s substantially softer shooting than what I would load for myself (95 nbt close to max). I would say it’s comparable to a 223 ar. The set up is for a 9 year old. He killed an elk last year but I used too hard of a bullet and wasn’t super happy with it.
I barely have any experience but I had a fairly miserable hunt last December with my flintlock. White out for the first two days. Fired successful shot on day three. I left it loaded the whole time. Carried everything I needed to clean the gun and all my reloads in ziplocks. And I made a gun...
I’ve been working on something very different from most guys here. A reduced recoil hunting load for my son’s 18” 243. I loaded some very mild 87gr vmax for it and did some culling. I’m very happy with terminal performance on animals from deer sized to a little bigger than elk. Not a lot of...
The nice thing about a 100 grain broadhead and a weighted insert is that there are 100x more broadheads available in that weight. You can get field points, broadheads, judos at any shop in the country and usually even at Walmart. Any broadhead you want to try will have a 100 grain option. That’s...
I would lean toward the gold tip with a heavy insert. I like their durability and cost. Both of the options you listed seem stiff, thus a weighted insert. Or go to a 500
Magnus stingers are great. I’ve used them a bunch with good success. They could be a little sharper out of the package.
I...
0 kneeling, I don’t feel stable or comfortable there.
15% prone
Standing and sitting are basically even. I’ve used tripod, trees, and pack for a rest. Also quite a few off hand shots.
Thinking about it blows my mind because I always want to shoot prone but it seems to rarely work out.
Those Bear recurves aren’t my personal favorite. I think overall feel and shoot ability is better with non mass produced bows. But the history is cool and you can get them for a great deal if you shop around religiously.
In the last 10 years I think the only loss I’ve had has been a javelina I shot with a trad bow. That’s 1 in 50ish animals with a mix of trad, compound, muzzleloader, rifle.
Now, there’s been some rodeos and really close calls that I feel like only turned out good because of luck or...
After I shot an NAP Spitfire through an elk at 78 yards, and watched it fly across the drainage behind, I decided that penetration doesn’t need to be my main concern. Since then I’ve pretty much only shot mechanicals(from the compound) with no complaints. I shot one through a small mule deer at...
Wish I would have seen that sooner. I spent a bunch of time in Brunswick. I’m kind of hoping I never have to go back to GA but that does sound pretty good. Not quite worth driving 24 hours for though.
You definitely still need to broadhead tune but it is easier now than it was 20 years ago. I walk my broadhead and field point together with just a few groups at 20 yards. Then I do the same at 50. With new bows, drop away rests, and new better flying broadheads, it’s super easy.
I’ve been through a bunch of handgun training (maybe 80ish hours) and nobody has ever suggested either of the two sight pictures on the right. I’m sure there is some specific discipline that uses them.
Edit to say: I know I’m probably wrong with my terminology. After doing a poll with the guys...
I actually looked it up too. The description he is using is exactly what I’ve heard called a 6oclock hold. Apparently I don’t use a 6 o’clock hold but it sure feels like it and that’s what everyone I know calls it.
I’m not sure if all these diagrams are antiquated or everyone I know is mixed...
I went through almost a dozen different sight setups for my muzzleloader and finally decided on a 1/16” brass front bead and a rear peep with removable center to make it a ghost ring. It’s a traditional style gun but I still feel very confident at 150yds. 6 o’clock hold is the most precise way...
