Do you tip your game processor?

If I remember right, the meat cutters split the money 50/50 with the guy who owned the property, coolers and equipment. Two of them were spitting out 50 to 60 deer and/or antelope a day working as many hours as they could. Not horrible money while the season lasted. About half those animals...

Do you tip your game processor?

The processor I worked for as a skinner in college, made ridiculously good money during the season, and they never mentioned or expected any kind of tip. Picking up game promptly is greatly appreciated since freezer space is often at a premium. Everyone likes donuts when working late.

    7mm Soul Searching

I’m also old school and conservative with distance. I’ve always limited shots to under 450 - if I could get to 450 the shot is pretty certain shooting over a pack, and in calm conditions 500 has been reliably doable. This year I’ve been working on extending that to 600, but many days and...

    What did you sew today?

Those Sailrite machines are really cool - the project videos are well done.

    What did you sew today?

My current project is coming up with a replacement for an industrial sewing machine table - something that will sit on top of a kitchen table or work bench in the garage. At first it seemed like something that should be easy to do - like an old timey wood base for black Singer residential...

    Did your Christensen Arms group?

I see Brownells has actions with barrels (no trigger, bottom metal, or magazine) for $775ish for a mesa and a couple hundred more for the carbon barrel ridge line.

Recommend me a boot (low volume feet)

Normal width Asolo Fugitive or TPS 520 are closer to a C width. I can’t wear many of the popular D width boots without going through what you described. These are popular hiking/backpacking boots and can often be found on eBay in nearly new condition for under $100, especially in your size...

Oregon hunting guide killed by accidental discharge

These stories remind me of taking a bunch of 14 year olds deer hunting for the first time. They all have their own rifles and have shot things like prairie dogs for a number of years, but they are green green green. It’s good to have a plan before this comes up, because it never fails one kid...

    Getting into ML

I think you’re on the right track with a well known rifle of whatever flavor. If you are stuck using iron sights only, I wouldn’t pass up a good deal on a traditional rifle like anything from Lyman if that style is at all interesting. I had one and 100 yard groups were ridiculously good - with...

    7mm Soul Searching

I’m glad to see more sleek 270 bullets - the numbers between it and a 6.5 PRC are neck and neck, at least to 500.

What to use for cracking, bleeding hands in the field.

I have the same problem and once it starts those cracks take forever to heal. I have been open to trying special bag balms, but found a way to get Walmart scent free lotion to work. It’s the heavy duty lotion very similar to brand names, but $3 cheaper. Unlike products that are just oil or...

    7mm Soul Searching

I’m a big fan of the 280ai - don’t have one yet, but will one of these days. I doubt any animal would be able to tell the difference between it and a 7 mag.

Tikka vs Christensen arms build 6mm CM

The CA barrels I use on my Remington action have great machining, chambers every bit as uniform as a custom barrel, and the bores look great - all around heads above any Remington that’s ever come off the line. That’s not to say they haven’t had problems and I don’t know anything about...

Christensen Mesa FFT off to a bad start.

I bet you’re glad that you kept with it! Nice group.

Tikka vs Christensen arms build 6mm CM

The anti CA posts are funny to me - there’s only 14 or 15 parts outside of pins and springs, and they aren’t reinventing the wheel - it’s a very close clone of a Remington so absolutely zero rocket science involved in producing better machining than Remington, with proven dimensions, clearances...

    Mountain Bobcat set location?

It can depend on what they eat. Randomly setting traps in rocky areas might work eventually, but traps in rocky areas with healthier concentrated pray populations is better. All forms of life are more concentrated along streams, but it helps to have areas with structure that might concentrate...

    6.5x55 or 6.5 PRC

How many different types of ammo will you be hunting with? Just a quick Look at Midway and there are all sorts of options for the 6.5x55. I’d hunt with Federal loaded with Accubonds and never want for a better combination. Foreign ammo is in short supply because of the war, but the Swede is...

    Let them grow?

With point restrictions, more people are in the field longer, which I’m not a fan of. Forcing a meat hunter to take an older deer doesn’t make sense to me. I suppose it comes down to how many licenses you want to sell for a given area. I focus on getting one old deer and don’t pay much...

    6.5x55 or 6.5 PRC

I love it when a cartridge over 100 years older still does anything Hornady’s Profit Reaping Cartridge can, and the choice only comes down to factory ammo availability. The 264 win mag spanks them both with an old fashioned belted case - old grandpa cartridge. Lol
