    I-Pad or Laptop for E-Scouting

My old laptop is finally about to kick the bucket. Will be looking at buying something new in the next few weeks. I would use this device mainly for random internet cruising, E-scouting, and, if I go the IPad option, it’d be used for watching a sports game while out on the boat. I don’t work...

    FNG from MN

I want to say I spent a good $650 on it new. I know earlier this spring a buddy in Boise had an opportunity to buy a new K3 at $350 after they introduced the K4s. Looking at used prices now I'm very surprised they are as spendy as they are. Maybe used isnt the route

    FNG from MN

Another Minnesotan here, welcome! I spent a year out in Boise last year on a work assignment, have some recommendations for you if you make it that far on your hunt but didnt spend much time in that unit. I bought an Exo K2 5500 5-6 years ago and absolutely love it. Gets good use in the fall...

Equipment suggestions, first back country hunt.

Petzel Actik with a few rechargeable batteries are real tough to beat. Lightweight, last a good while, super bright compared to competitors, and easily charges using a portable battery source. Don't get suckered into buying those garbage black diamonds. FWIW, I have never compared brand to...

    Idaho Spring Bear

Went for an afternoon hike in 33 yesterday afternoon to check out an area I had never been to. Plenty green anywhere 3800 ft and below. It was bone dry and brown at 4800 in the few places I looked. I'd be pretty thrilled for my hunt if it was in the next few weeks. Walleyes back home will always...

    Idaho Spring Bear

Your guess is better than mine, but this is something I read recently and got me thinking a bit. “Bears tend to den on north faces and transition to the lush south faces for feed, but at this point in the season, the snow was keeping them from heading over from north faces to south faces. As...

    Idaho Spring Bear

I'm only able to hunt the last week of April and maybe a few days first thing in May. For those familiar with normal conditions in late April I'm curious on your thoughts- generally speaking, how high is too high? I saw in a report from last year the snowline was around 5k ft in late April. What...

1 Piece of Advice to pass onto a New Hunter

The vast majority of the time it isn't going to look like how they make it look on instagram or youtube.

Best overall freeze dried food brands? Ty

x2. And it isnt close. Its freakin good! The beef stroganoff isnt bad either but that chicken pesto tough to beat. Last trip we joked and thought we could whip up a bag or two, and if served with the right glass of wine our girlfriends would have no idea where it came from. I stock up when I...

    Idaho Steelhead Run

First time out steelie fishing and had way more luck than I ever expected!! First day I felt completely useless. Second day I stumbled into a super nice guy who was glad to help me out a bit. Definitely took a certain technique I never would have gotten had I not had him to show me. Caught 4 in...

    Idaho Steelhead Run

Unfortunately, I’m still a spin guy. I’m hoping that changes while I’m here, but for now I’m still a rookie throwing a big spinner. I just purchased another rod/reel setup to have a float rod as well. That’s a whole new deal. I was actually just watching some YT videos of guys fishing in the...

    Idaho Steelhead Run

Hold on here, need ya'll to slow down. I've got about 12 different google maps tabs open, you're giving me a headache!! 😂 Seriously though, thank you. Before I had booked this contract I would road-trip out here a few times a summer just to fish. I once drove 1500 miles, each way, to...

    Idaho Steelhead Run

Looks like an unreal day @280Ackley. I've been on their site and didn't realize they offered the single tag along trip. I will be looking into that! Thank you @Customweld! It seems like Riggins is a good place for a rookie like me to start. Looks like there are multiple rivers in the area...

    Idaho Steelhead Run

Curious if theres anyone around the Boise area that wouldn't mind helping me out a bit. I'm a travel nurse that just took an assignment in town for the next 5 months. All I care to do on my days off is fish. I've never caught an Idaho steelhead before and thats really goal #1. I can imagine...

Location, Quality of life, profession/trade or family? What single factor influences where you live?

I've enjoyed reading others' thoughts on this thread. I wanted to move to MT/ID/CO a few years ago but pay in my field is much less there than where I'm from. Now, as a travel nurse, with no wife/no kids/no attachments and in my late 20s I'm fortunate I get to bounce around more than most. Grew...

    New Rifle Accessories

Recently bought a new 300wm Christensen Mesa and threw my NF SHV 4-14 ffp on it. I’m most the way through the full barrel break in process that Christensen want you to do according to their website. This will be a mostly western backcountry hunting rifle. I’m requesting recommendations on a...

    Planning an Elk Hunt

I run a small battery operated fan and a CO2 monitor for that kind of set up. I appreciate you mentioning it though!

    Planning an Elk Hunt

I'm also a midwestern whitetail guy transitioning to a CO elk myself. In my little experience it all seems to be on personal preference. Want to sleep in a nice warm, cozy cot at the truck with a stomach full of good food but then wake up an hour or two before sun up, hike few miles up the side...

    Ideal Rifle Scope

Awesome info Cross, lion, and tdot. Really appreciate it. Knowing how to set zero and properly dial is way more important than any mil vs moa and FFP vs SFP decision. Doesn’t seem like many are too high on FFP scopes. Those that like them tend to love and highly recommend them though.
