You should be able to go to any hardware store and pick up a 5/16-24 Allen head screw just to hold your strap on. That's what I did until I found the stab I wanted.
That is exactly what happened to me. I spent a ton on boots and just lived with the not perfect fit. Then I tried the Salomon's and realized that I've got a wide ass forefoot and that was my whole problem. The Quests are awesome on my feet.

I will be finding out the answer to that in a few weeks. I've never been at altitude. We will be camping around 11,000 ft. I live at 1,250 ft but that's on top of a "mountain". It averages about 400 ft or so around here.
