Everyone has a different heel. I have found that my bony heels do better with nice round heel pockets for the most part. And the other thing I discovered is that fat insoles make it worse. I now just use those thin plastic danner heel cups in most boots with no other insert for the rest of my foot.
Eddie Bauer makes good stuff.
If you hit REI and start hitting the sales rack you can find good stuff in orange like Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear or Marmot.
As for layering I think the trick as K1 says is to keep it simple but really insulate it up with good air layer. I use a subzero down jacket when it gets Uber cold. It only weighs like 1.5 pounds and you can sit for hours in brutally cold weather.

Bibs or insulated EB guide pants.

That’s neat. That might actually be more painful than one 90 day stretch. Messes up his vacation time every year, plus three strip searches and intakes. Plus he has to dread the next year for 11 months.
NF = national forest road.
There are lots of pull offs on any given fire road. Pull off 10 yards into the timber or even park at a closed gate. Start hoofing from there.
Nobody will ticket your truck.
Nobody will mess with your stuff in most places.
I used to do my own elk processing but have come to the conclusion the most cost effective thing is to bone out the elk to get it off the mountain, then take the meat to the local butcher for processing. Keep the back straps and let them cut the roasts and grind the burger.
Why spend a whole...
I drove at first light from Breckenridge down through FairPlay then to Cañon City.
Saw zero elk in any field, meadow or edge of timber.
No like it was 15 - 20 years ago where you would see numerous small herds munching alfalfa in the farmers fields.
