What's the glass like on these scopes?
The price is getting up there but is relatively cheap for a Schmidt, so I'm guessing the glass isn't at the same level as a PM2/higher priced S&B scope.
RTZ should be pretty good off the Tikka rail, might now be perfect but it'll be within a few clicks.
If you want reliable RTZ when removing the scope a pic rail is probably the best way to go.
Looking at the results from the 223 75gr BTHP and the 6.5CM 147gr, it seems like both these and anything in between these is going to work well on game.
The 225gr ELDM 300PRC looks impressive.
So as a rule of thumb if you can't get a "match bullet" to stay above, say 1800fps similar to the Barnes TTSX or bonded bullets?
Reason I ask is I listened to the podcast just as I was thinking about starting to reload for a 303 that I wanted to use for close distance hunting. I have a 260...
You mentioned in the podcast about going too fast with match bullets (100gr 6.5mm for example) and that match bullets still expand at much lower velocities (223 at 800yards).
Is there a velocity range best to stay within or atleast not exceed?
What about if match bullets aren't available...
Form says that the traditional cup and core bullets are objectively worse than match bullets, hence the question.
The podcast discusses the "ideal" perfectly mushroomed bullet and how people have been convinced with marketing that it's what you want (I think of Remington CoreLokts "Dealiest...
While that is true, its not the point that is being made in the podcast.
Form says that match bullets make better hunting bullets, due to their tendency to fragment and tumble.
Just listened to the podcast “Bullet Ballistics: A hunters guide”, seems like something funny is happening in the background as it got recast on my app and doesn’t appear in the previous episodes.
Anyway, basic premise of the discussion is that heavy for calibre match bullets (ELD-M, TMK...
A VX6 2-12 with a firedot is an amazing scope if you hunt in tight bush.
I didn't have issue with either my VX5 or VX6, and many other rate them. I say buy a used one, do your own testing and I'd you aren't happy buying used means you don't loose much money.
You are right, the LRHS/LRTS is the closest thing ad the best chance of this happening.
However it doesn't meet the weight spec and I think that's one of the major sticking points with most people, otherwise they'd just buy the Maven 2.5-15.
It'll be interesting to see if this idea goes...
I would like to buy a scope like in the OP, heck I'd even just Iike to be able to find a used LRHS/LRST.
But realistically the only way this is happening in less than 12 months is with an existing base model, and as far as I'm aware nothing meets all of the specs in the original post.
But a big market for a single scope company (like Maven) isn't enough to get an OEM (like LOW) to spend precious time developing the worlds most perfect 3-12x40 scope, when they could develop the perfect 1-10 LPVO or 5-30x56 scope and sell 10x as many of them.
OEMs have limited man hours...
You have no idea how many scopes they've sold though.
If they just ordered the minimum order allowed from LOW and they are only arriving 20 at a time then that'll explain it.
There is also a huge amount of hype built up around that scope, thus a huge number of people wanting to buy one. There...
I think scope company's like Maven, Vortex, Nightforce etc, need to embrace the market, but an OEM isn't going to, at least not one like LOW. They have to make a product that will appeal to dozens of different companies and will be in the market for 5-10 years, they aren't going to...
The Maven/Weaver 2-10x38?
Or the Trijicon/Weaver 2-10x36?
Neither of these scopes meet all the specs outlined, nor does the LRS 3-12.
For the most part you can't go to an OEM and say I want X scope, with X changes, example; the Trijicon 2-10x30 but with adjustable parallax, 10mil turrets and...
Theoretically or realistically?
Realistically there aren't any OEMs that offer a scope that meets these specs and getting a custom design is going to cost too much/require more units than what Rokslide members will be to commit too.
Even if a new design could be justified and an OEM found who...
I think the PST Gen2s are all excellent scopes, I've spent a lot of time with all models except for the 2-10.
I've got a lot of mileage behind my 3-15 and it's one of my favorite scopes.
The only thing I don't like about it is the exposed windage. I've taken to taping the turret now but just...
