Slippery ground sheet and sleeping pad

Another thing to try is to reduce the amount of air in the pad--it is easier to stay on it that way for me.

Mystery Ranch 6500 - Any Reason to Keep?

Can anyone who has used both the 6500 and a comparable pack from the current lineup (Marshall?) on one of the versions of the Guide Light of Guide Light MT frames weigh in on the similarities and differences between the packs. I have a 6500 too and it gets left home a lot because of the extra...

    6-7 lb tent to heavy?

If you are hunting elk out of a backpack in Colorado at some point you will most likely wish you weren't packing a 6.5 lb tent, but it isn't likely to be a deal breaker either. If you can get all the features you want in a lighter tent you can afford, that is great, but a few extra pounds isn't...

Trail Runners VS Light Hiking Boot

I have had good luck with stout trail runners (Inov-8 Roclite 315s) and prefer them to boots for the conditions you describe. No issues, even with a heavy pack, and I plan to wear the same kind of trail runner this season. My feet get wet sometimes, but then they dry out. People feel...

    I need experienced info

I have had large Mystery Ranch and Kifaru packs (6500/7000 cu). Both compress down to comfortable day pack size (though one wouldn't pick them as a dedicated daypack), I wouldn't want to do a 5-8 day trip with anything smaller than 5000 CU and would prefer something bigger. There is more...

10x10 tarp for lightweight shelter or shaped tarp?

I have hunted out of a DST Tarp and a Kifaru Supertarp. I prefer the DST in a standard flying diamond pitch over a Supertarp standard pitch for early elk at least because it feels like more usable space and headroom (and I love my Supertarp). Hard to beat a square tarp for versatility...

    Tarp vs tarp and bivy

It depends. I have never used a bivy as defense against bugs or critters (if those are expected to be issues, I prefer a tent). If using a small tarp, a bivy can help with rain splash or condensation if you bump up against the sides. I don't really like bivies because of the fiddle factor...

How much of a PIA factor are Dyeema/DCF for light and fast camping

My experience with DCF is limited to ones square tarp, but all things considered, as of now I prefer silnylon--it is less expensive, packs smaller, seems to have more stretch, which is sometimes a good thing, sometimes not, provides better sunshade if you need it, blends into the background...

    what exped pad ?

Sierra Trading Post has Exped DownMat 7s on sale right now for a good price. I've had one in the large/long size for a few years and it is a comfortable, warm and quiet pad. I have used it in Montana for September through late October backpack hunts and winter camping. It isn't ultralight but...

    Ti Goat Bivy

If you are looking for protection from dew it could work and is a lot lighter, but it wouldn't be enough if rain was a real possibility. The TiGoat doesn't end up with any more condensation than an eVent or Goretex bivy, just more than no bivy at all,

    Ti Goat Bivy

What are you planning to use the bivy for? I have a Ptarmigan and it is good for basic splash protection under a small tarp, but it is too minimalist as a stand-alone bivy and I don't carry it if sleeping under a bigger tarp/using a sleeping bag with good DWR. I would tend to get a bit of...

    DST Tarp vs Flat Tarp

I have a DST but do not have a Bearpaw designs tarp so I cannot compare the two. I think that the DST is a flat tarp too, but someone can correct me if that isn't right. The DST is simple and easy to set up in the flying diamond. and I have slept in it approximately 10 days in that set up. I...

What are you looking to do with the tarp? That may help folks to help you with your decision.

    Camp Tarp Shelter

I have a Kelty Noah's Tarp (20x20), which is more or less identical to the REI tarp you list and use it for common space on trips where I am near the truck or not packing it in very far. They are often available on sale and seem like a good value for the cost. I like it (good for sun and...

    Exped Megamat Outfitter

I have slept on many different pads and the Thermarest MondoKing 3D is the most comfortable and warm pad I have ever used. I can't compare it to the Exped Megamat as have never slept on one.

    Tarp pitching questions

Kifaru's website say 52 inch height in the front. I don't know the exact length, but I am 6'3'' and have plenty of room to stretch out between the front and back poles. Even buttoned down it is luxurious space for one.

    Tarp pitching questions

I have a Kifaru Supertarp--I bought an annex but almost never use it and never miss it when I don't. Maybe if the tarp is all buttoned down and you are using the stove, but even then I don't like to use the annex. I prefer the feel and ventilation of an open front.

    Western Mountaineering Versalite

Can you try it out before buying to check the fit? I have a couple of their long bags and am about your size and feel like I have just barely enough room in the chest.

    satellite phone suggestions

Just got back from a trip with an Explorer Satellitte rental--phone and service were excellent. They Fedex it to you and you Fedex back after your trip. Came in around $100 for phone and call time.
