Fly fishing rod holder for backcountry hunting

I have used the fluorescent light tubes--very light and some protection. If your bundle the sections with a hair tie either in the rod sock or without it I think you get a bit more strength too. I prefer a fly rod with a reel and fly line over a tenkara and there are very light reels out...

Concerns flying with guns under todays political climate

I have flown multiple times in and out of LaGuardia in New York with long guns and never had even a whiff of a problem. There are the usual forms to fill out and inspection of the gun in its case, but airline and airport staff were nothing but helpful and courteous. No attitude or hassle...

Recommendations for a 2 person canoe or kayak

It is very different from what you are considering in the Brooklyn kayak, but for that same weight and probably a lot less $ you can get an extremely versatile used 16-17 foot Royalex canoe--think OId Town Tripper/Penobscot or Mad River Explorer/revelation. Check your local Craigslist. I have...

    ultralight backcountry rod

My family has used the Eagle Claw and Ugly Stik travel rods heavily for years on backcountry trips by canoe and on foot--they work well and are inexpensive.

On the hunt for a sleeping pad...

I have tried a lot of pads through the years and the sweet spot for me in the situation you describe (assuming you are backpacking) is the largest Exped Downmat 9. It is warm, quiet, big and comfortable. It isn't light but I have been willing to pay the weight penalty in return for a warm...

6P Tipi and Regular Height Cots?

I know you can fit two full sized Cabelas cots easily in a Kifaru 6 man with a stove. Not optimal space use, but at least you can stow stuff underneath them and between them and the tipi wall down low. You could fit a third person in there, but not sure you could get a third cot with a stove...

    Wok & Cast Iron Pans

Griswold cast iron is great if you can find it at a reasonable price--I am originally from PA and picked up a bunch at yard sales before it became a thing. As for the wok, I use and recommend a carbon steel wok--can get them cheap on Amazon. I have a 16 inch round bottom one and use it on my...

    Land navigation book

NOLS Wilderness Navigation is a good one. There used to be a series of navigation essays on the Kifaru website written by a guy named Dick Blust that were excellent in my opinion. Not sure if they are still on Kifaru or floating around the web somewhere.

    Mossberg 500 - 20 gauge combo

My first gun was also an H&R single shot 20 gauge with an exposed hammer and it kicked hard, which was discouraging to me as a wee one. I started my son on a 20 gauge autoloader--I got a good deal on a Benelli Montefeltro--and it worked out well as a first shotgun. He has taken two deer with...

    Tipi tent in wind

Choosing a location out of the main wind, a tight pitch and good stakes help. If it looks bad I also like to tie out to a few natural anchors (trees, rocks, dead man anchors) if possible--give more confidence that if it gets really rough the tipi isn't going to take off.

Kifaru slick bag substitute - lead time rules it out

Take a look at some of the big bags from Big Agnes--Echo Park? Not ideal for backpacking but definitely a roomy synthetic bag if that is what you want.

Satellite Phone for my Elk Hunt?

A very personal decision whether you want to have it in the circumstances you describe, but in terms of how to do it--I have rented a sat phone a few times from Explorer Satellite and it has been a good experience each time at what seemed like a very reasonable price. They FedEx it to you with...

    Broadhead help!?

I had a similar, but not identical, issue. I can't explain why, but I put a more substantial stabilizer (B-Stinger) on my bow and it brought my Magnus 2 blade heads right on with my field points and has worked great for about 8 years since then after having been a real bear to tune.

    Random Tipi Thoughts

There is a lot of pleasure in having a tipi under the conditions you describe--I don't do it all the time, but a late fall solo hunt I did where I backpacked in a Kifaru 6 man and medium woodstove was one of the coolest experiences of my life because the time around a warm fire after dark was so...

    Future Kifaru Minimalist bags

Lots of love for the highcamp here--I bought one when it first came out and it has served me well given what it is. It hits one of the sweet spots in terms of weight/comfort/utility for me.

    Preferred "all-around" bag temperature rating

Based on your description of wanting a single bag to do it fall through spring, including winter, I would go with zero degree bag. I don't think it can be too warm for a bag. If it is too warm zipped up, you can unzip it and stick a leg out, which is easier than using every trick in the book...

    Synthetic fill bag recommendations

My son has a Mountain Hardwear Lamina that he has used hard for a four years--it has served him well but has lost a lot of loft despite being stored uncompressed. It wasn't expensive and he has close to 100 nights in it so not knocking it on the loft, just another factor to consider.

    Is South Shore Archery Legit?

Doesn't it make more sense to at least call the vendor before posting something like this on a public board using "scammed" in the same sentence as a small business owner's name? I have used him for years and he has made great arrows for me and been very helpful on the phone.

    Cabelas camp cot with organizer

I have a couple of similar Cabelas cots and think I bought the organizers separately. The cot is a good, solid full sized cot--comfortable enough in summer, need a pad in cooler weather, heavy, but nice where you don't have to carry it and space isn't an issue. In a wall tent, space under the...

Thought Process on 30 vs 15 Degree Sleeping Bag

I tend to go with a warmer bag because there are so many things I can change or leave home to lose the pack weight if necessary and an extra pound of goose down can make a big difference in comfort. I don't like being cold and I don't like having to use every trick in the book the wring a warm...
