    Taking SS early (62)

I retired just before turning 62. In my case when running the calculations it took about 16 years to break even by waiting. Then I spoke to my financial advisor and he confirmed my calcs.

    Saltwater fly fishing reels

I have used the fly fishing rod/gear reviews from Yellowstone Angler for many years. They go into detail on how the evaluations are carried out, use the feedback from several judges to determine the rankings. It just so happens that in 2023 Yellowstone Angler did a gear review on 8 wt reels...

    Fun little rimfire

I just picked one up 3 weeks ago, put a Tract 22 Fire 4x12x40 BDC on it. Just like yours the gun will shoot, consistently under an inch at 100 yards with Horandy 33 grain Vmax. Rings steel at 200 yards all day long using the BDC reticle.

Frequency of muscle groups at 66 years old

I am 64, had a hip replaced 12 years ago, both rotator cuffs repaired, along with both knees worked on. I go to RedZone fours days/week. Have been steady with this routine for over 5 years, going through a number of those surgeries during this time. I do like the class setting as it is a...

    Best trail cameras?

Been running trail cameras for years. The first ones were Stealth, then moved to Reconyx about 15 years ago. Reconyx are expensive, but each of the three are still running and stay out taking photos 24/7/365. Once cameras moved into the cell service era, I tried Cuddeback, at least for me...

    Lathrop and sons

I couldn’t agree more about the quality of L&S boots. Over the years of hunting the western states, I booked an Alaskan grizzly hunt and went in this past September. I was wanting a better experience with my boots than what my previous experience had been. As I narrowed down my boot research...

    270 Weatherby Magnum bullet selection

Been shooting a 270 wby since 1989, and it has accounted for its’ fair share of animals. All of them have hit the dirt using a 150 partition. Haven’t Seen the need to change from an accuracy or performance perspective. Don’t fix was isn’t broken.

Spartan Ascent Tripod / Trekking Poles System?

I have the Spartan Ascent gen 11 tripod. I have not had the opportunity to use it in a hunting situation, that will change this fall, an Alaskan spot and stalk grizzly hunt is booked. I have used the tripod in various shooting positions at the range, digiscoping with a large spotting scope...

    College vs skilled trades.

As I coached my kids, college isn’t for everyone, and the data supports that. Roughly 38% of the U.S. population receives an undergraduate degree, 6.4% a masters, and 2.0% a doctorate. I fully support a college education, as I am a chemical engineer, and spent 4 years as an adjunct professor...

    Bipod, tripod, or pack

Picked up Spartan Ascent tripod this past fall. It has worked exceptionally well, for glassing, trekking poles, and in the end to shoot from.

    Belts for hunting pants

The belt is thin and light. I used the belt this past hunting season, which meant that I had a Mystery Ranch Popup 28 with me for each outing. I retired this past September, so I spent many days bow hunting deer. There were zero issues with the belt and pack setup.

    Belts for hunting pants

I used the Argali belt the entire fall hunting season. It is easy on and easy off, this belt does not slip or loosen up at all. I have yet to use the field sharpening setup while hunting. It is a piece of gear that has worked flawlessly so far. For me it works so well that I am going to...

    28 Gauge

I have been upland hunting exclusively with a 28 ga. since the mid 90’s, running various pointing breeds for pheasants, quail, ruff grouse and woodcock. I shoot mostly 6 shot and then once in awhile have 7.5 shot in the first barrel. The first barrel set up is when hunting for woodcock and...

Argali Kodiak Belts Are Finally Here

Mine arrive a few days ago. I haven’t had a chance or need to use the sharpening portion of the belt as of yet. I have been wearing the belt everyday since arrival, certainly impressed on how it stays locked and tight.

    What Weatherby Caliber?

I have a number rifles including several Weatherbys, for the last 40 years I seem to rely on the 270 WM. It has done everything that I have needed, from Elk, Caribou, Moose, Mule deer and Whitetail.

    Best Folding Knife?

I have been carrying a Hinderer XM 18 3.5 for the past 5 years. It gets abused daily. This EDC has out lasted any of the others by a wide margin.
