Scoping a Guide Gun ruins its handiness and packability. I use a peep sight. Maximum Point Blank range is only 150yds with my loads and I dont need a scope for that.
Stick with what you have - it works. You dont want a bullet with a pretty mushroom - you want one like what you've got that will chew stuff up even after a 500yd trip.
Pretty mushroom bullets are hole drillers at that distance - an elk-size critter can run a long ways with an arrow shaft-size...
I tried to read through the thread, so I apologize if this has already been touched on.
(1) whenever you move the shoulder, the case length increases.
(2) You can neck-size only. Much easier. Sounds like you shoot well enough to do an accuracy test.
(3) WWII 30-06 ammo was sealed with tar -...
Use a trekking pole and learn to walk :D
Or go to a lightweight fixed power scope. Less mass, less inertia.
Or leave your rifle in a airline case until you are ready to shoot since folks want to you to accurize for shooting groups.
Oh and definitely lap.
I went with a Mossberg Patriot Super Bantam ( 6.3lbs bare rifle) in 308. I reloaded 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tips to 2650fps from the 20" barrel (38gr of H4895). That rifle&load has taken one mule deer so far by my 10yr old grandson.
Initially I filled the buttstock with shot - the weight helped...
The idea was to start them shooting with a rifle that had very little recoil. After they felt comfortable, remove the shot. After they were proficient with the reduced load (100+ rounds), then I step it up to a full-power load. No bad habits, no flinch, and plenty of confidence.
Well if recoil was all that mattered, you'd be right.
The .243 was the original kid's rifle back in the day. But cup & core bullets left a lot to be desired when hunting Elk. Bonded bullets today have really improved that cartridge IMO.
The real key to any "kid's" rifle is fit and there are a...
Only my son will look up where I'm at when he receives a "check in" message. And that's only if he thinks I might be somewhere interesting. None of my daughters will check the map unless I have one of their kids with me. And I had to add a bunch of other contact numbers to my emergency contact...
I tried to read through everything in this thread, so my apologies if this has been asked: Do you want to hunt, or do you want to shoot?
If you want to hunt, then focus on field shooting - the positions, unknown ranges, shot placement, time to first shot.
Hiking poles are a necessity to me. I started by spending $3 at Goodwill for X-country ski poles (last a long time). I'm tall enough that they work fine. All it takes is one misplaced step to twist an ankle, and that alone convinces most folks that hiking poles are a good investment. At least it...
Doesn't effect accuracy for hunting. Base of the bullet is much more important than the tip. But I can see where a guy would be upset that the tips were breaking.
I'd likely get rid of some other stuff to make room for the tape. The stuff is multi-use and is about the only thing that will stick to skin. I'd leave the duck tape at home.
