    Experience at Shoot2Hunt

S2HU is not a long range class. Based on what you wrote it sounds like you’re pretty good at long range shooting. The title of the course is pretty accurate and I would be shocked if you didn’t come away from it a far better shooter when it comes to hunting. I’m a fairly experienced hunter and...

Why so much emphasis on super fast prone shots?

I’ve had the quick prone shot once on a deer hunt. My buddy and I were cruising some rim rock slowly at first light and rounded a corner and caught 3 deer moving up a draw 300 yards away almost at the top. My buddy ranged it and I dropped my pack and set up for the shot. It was a flat spot...

My 223 is what you described but with a 20” barrel, an ultra 7 and I believe it’s around 8.5lbs.

There’s more to it than just being able to tolerate the recoil for 1000 rounds. I think the low recoil of the 223 makes for a better learning environment when it comes to all of the positions outside of prone. I’ve heard Form say this and I believe it, most people shoot low recoiling guns more...

Yes. You should rent a 223 at a minimum. Even if you could handle shooting 1,000 rounds of your Grendel I think there is a lot of benefit to shooting the 223. Personally I think it would be worth buying a 223 even if you can’t hunt with it and simply using it to practice with. Just my opinion.

@Shaymos94 I have the kestrel 2700 which is fairly inexpensive and basic but it does give accurate temperature and wind speed. It also allows for one rifle profile saved in it for ballistic calculation. I use the temp off the kestrel, elevation from phone or just knowing where I’m at, and the DA...

Perhaps. @Formidilosus can speak to it more but it sounds like they’ve never had anything but issues in the course with those rifles.

We had two R700 based guns at the June 9-13 class. Neither really worked. My buddy attended the class with me and had one of them and isn’t active on here so I’ll speak for him. His brother puts together “custom” R700 based guns for him. He’s selling all of them and buying Tikka or the MRC. He...

@Wprinkle summed it up really well. I attended the same class and wanted to say the class actually exceeded my expectations and I went into it with really high expectations. If you think you’re good at shooting (you’re not) you will learn a tremendous amount and the system they teach just works...

That’s crazy! It’s hard to draw tags as a resident and I’ve never heard of a non resident drawing three. Congrats! What else did you get?

You drew 3 NV tags as a non-resident?!?!? There shouldn’t be many cactus, there’s really not much in northern Nevada. Snakes are around but not in huge numbers in my experience.

    Nevada hunters -- 10x42 vs. 12x50?

I live and hunt in NV and if you and your buddies are hunting without a spotter or 15’s you are absolutely missing animals, especially deer! In my opinion 10x binos on chest, best you can afford, 15x slc and best spotter you can afford. To me the spotter is an absolute necessity in NV. I...

how do you sustain energy levels when you wake up early

Lots of good advice so far. The only thing I’ll add is getting natural sunlight in your eyes in the morning especially, and evenings. This means no sunglasses, or looking through window glass etc for an hour or more in the morning. I don’t mean looking directly at the sun, just natural light. It...

    Zone 2

You might even be too low at 125-130. I do a lot of stair climber and I’ve been training using the Morpheus app and chest strap. https://trainwithmorpheus.com/ I’m 42 and my zone 2 is typically high 130’s even into low 140’s. The Morpheus app checks your HRV each morning, you input your sleep...

Sorry I see the hunt now you’re referring to. Calling it a dep tag through me off since the regs don’t use that word, like they do with the dep elk tags.

I’m aware of HSTE hunts, my wife had a tag last season. The depredation part through me off as I’ve never heard of a dep HSTE hunt and I don’t see it in the regs you linked.
